Game Trivia

  • The design of Sonic changed in Sonic Adventure from the Sonic games on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console because the development team had to work and adapt to the technical graphical change of 2D to 3D. Sonic on the Genesis was seen from the side while Sonic in Sonic Adventure was seen from behind. During development, the team noticed that it was difficult to see Sonic movements in 3D on the Dreamcast using Sonic's Genesis design, which led to the decision from the development team to redesigned Sonic, in order to have his arms and legs to be seen in 3D and from a third person, behind view perspective.

  • Similar to previous games in the franchise, Super Sonic was originally intended to be an upgrade for Sonic that could be used in any level of the game, rather than just the final boss fight. There are unused voice clips still present in the game's files that narrate directions for transforming into Super Sonic.

  • When the decision was made to switch development of Sonic Adventure from the Sega Saturn to the Sega Dreamcast, the entire game needed to be reprogrammed. However, not wanting their work to go to waste, Sonic Team ultimately decided to clean up the work they'd already done and include it in the Sega Saturn game Sonic Jam as a mini-title known as Sonic World.

  • A two-headed dragon boss was planned, but ultimately cut, for Sky Chase. The model of the boss still exists in the game's code and can be edited into the game using a cheat device, but it does not behave properly and cannot attack.

  • Artists redesigned Sonic's look for Sonic adventure, giving him longer limbs, different shoes, green eyes, and an overall "edgier" design. Sonic retained this look, more or less unaltered, until his next major redesign in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric 15 years later.
