To promote the game's launch, Sega held a "Graffiti is Art" event in San Francisco's Justin Herman Plaza, awarding $5000 to the contest's best spray artist. It was judged by graffiti artist Haze, DJ Chuy Gomez, and John Tempesta, plus two of the game's designers. However, Mayor Willie Brown sought to have the contest moved out of the city on the grounds it promoted vandalism. This prompted Sega to make the statement: "While a portion of the game's storyline does involve graffiti art, it is portrayed within the context of creative self-expression, not vandalism. Sega does not condone graffiti as an act of vandalism with the release of Jet Grind Radio."
