INTRODUCTION
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This game is known by two names:

Masters of the Universe the Ilearth Stone, according to the title screen,
and Masters of the Universe: The Arcade Game, according to the box.

The Ilearth Stone is a platformer, copyright 1986 and released in 1987.

I wrote this walkthrough based on my play of the Commodore 64 version of
the game, but the Sinclair Spectrum version is similar. Where there are
known differences, I not those specifically.

This walkthrough contains spoilers.

At the bottom of the screen are these indicators:

MOONS TIL DOOM: This represents the game's time limit. You start the game
with four full moons, and the moons slowly disappear over time. When there
are no moons remaining, time is up, and you lose one life.

SKULLS CRACKED: The score. Increments by 10 for each enemy defeated.

LIVES: The number of opportunities you have to continue playing.

BODY SHIELD: This is your health meter. When it is depleted, you lose one
life.

SWORD STATUS: This indicates the power of your sword. So long as the gauge
is not depleted, you will shoot energy from your sword when you attack with
it.

PLOT
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You are He-Man on a mission to defeat Skeletor, who has occupied one of the
towers of Castle Grayskull. According to the game's manual, Skeletor has
achieved invincibility with an object called the "Ilearth Stone".

To defeat Skeletor, you must first destroy the Ilearth Stone, but at the
outset, you have insufficient power to do so. You need to upgrade the Power
Sword to the ATOM SMASHER.

The upgrade requires the use of ingredients, which are scattered throughout
Grayskull. There seven ingredients in total, but only six of them are used
for the upgrade. The other item will ruin the upgrade and require that you
start collecting ingredients from the beginning.

Once you have collected all and only the six correct ingredients, Orko will
use them to produce the ATOM SMASHER. With that upgraded sword, you can
destroy the Ilearth Stone and then defeat Skeletor.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FAQ
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What are the correct ingredients used to make the ATOM SMASHER?
A:
   1. Weed (A scraggly plant)
   2. Dagger (A small sword)
   3. Round-bottom flask (A piece of glassware that is narrow at the top
                           and wide at the bottom)
   4. Triangle
   5. Wand (A horizontal rectangle.)
   6. Ring (A circle with a hole through its center)

Q: Must I collect the ingredients in a particular order?
A: No.

Q: What is the bad item, which spoils the upgrade?
A: A spiked ball.

Q: What does the Ilearth Stone look like?
A: An irregular hexagon on top of a pedestal.

Q: How do I destroy the Ilearth Stone?
A: Walk up to it and attack it with the upgraded sword.

WALKTHROUGH

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: Ingredients appear in specific locations, but which ingredient appears
in which location varies by playthrough. In this walkthrough, I note
ingredients as ***INGREDIENT***. Grab them all except for the spiked ball.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Interior Ground Floor
*****************************************

At the beginning of the game, you start in a room where these features are
immediately visible; an arched doorway, an elevator platform, a lever,
a warrior on a ledge who shoots energy beams at He-Man.

Flip the lever by walking towards it from the bottom of the screen. You
should be a little left of the center of the lever. This lever makes
accessible an ingredient that would otherwise not be accessible.

Jump on the spinning, elevating platform just after it starts rising from its
lowest point. Jump by holding <Left> and press <Up>.

When you land on the platform, the platform rotates. To jump off, press
<Fire>. Press <Fire> when you are facing the ledge with the purple warrior.
Approach the warrior and attack once with <Fire> to destroy it. Note that the
warrior stands in front of a doorway out of which another warrior will emerge
if you wait too long.

Walk to the left. There is a waist-height robot that looks like a cotton
ball on a canister vacuum cleaner. Attack it and continue left. At the
end of the ledge, there is a gap followed by a very small ledge. Jump to
the small ledge. Do not pause, and jump to the next ledge left.

On the next ledge, attack the purple warrior. Grab
the energy bar. The energy bar powers up the SWORD STATUS gauge. When the
gauge is not empty, the sword shoots energy bursts.

Continue to the left and jump to the next ledge. You should see an
arched doorway at the far left of this ledge. On the ground below, just
to the left of the ledge is an ingredient. Ignore it for now.

Jump to the next ledge to the left. You should see an enemy, an energy
barrier, a switch, and an ***INGREDIENT***. Jump from the ledge to the
ground, and defeat the enemy. Grab the ingredient.

To the left of the energy barrier is an elevating platform. Jump on it
and ride it to the ledge with the switch. Flip the switch to disable the
energy barrier. Go through the door to appear back at the beginning of
Castle Grayskull - Interior Ground Floor.

Repeat the process of going to the left along the ledge. When you reach
the doorway on a ledge, ignore it again. Jump down to the floor below
and defeat the gun-wielding warrior, who shoots energy blasts at you.
It is best if you have energy blasts of your own to shoot back. You
should see an ingredient just to the left. Grab the ***INGREDIENT***.

It is time to return to the beginning of Castle Grayskull - Interior
Ground Floor one more time. Walk to the right. You will reach a wide gap.
Notice a platform that hovers back and forth over the gap. Jump onto the
spinning platform. Perform the jump just before the platform reaches the
extreme left side of the gap.

Ride the platform across the gap. Jump off the platform toward the right
just before the platform makes its way all the way to the right. Continue
to the right. You will jump up two stairs and three small gaps. Depending
on your timing, you may hit the enemy on the ledge above. This will cost
some of your Body Shield. Continue to the right to reach the beginning.

SPECTRUM DIFFERENCE: There is an ingredient on the platform following
the second of the three gaps.

Jump on the spinning, elevating platform one more time and make your way
left across the ledge one more time. This time, when you reach the doorway
on a ledge, go through it. The door will take you outside, in front of the
Jawbridge. You cannot re-enter yet.

*****************************************
Outside Grayskull
*****************************************

(If you did not flip the switch at the beginning of the ground floor,
everything outside the castle has a green hue. If you flipped the switch,
everything has a blue hue.)

Destroy the two blue spear warriors. Walk to the left a short distance to
find an ***INGREDIENT***. Grab it.

If you were to continue to the left, you would eventually reach a swamp
from which would emerge a swamp monster. If you ever fall through the first
floor of Grayskull or lose a life outside, this swamp is where you will
re-spawn.

Walk to the right until you see a gap. You will need to jump across the gap.
I find that the best place to do this is near the bottom of the screen.

A dragon may drop an egg from the sky. The egg hatches on impact, releasing a
snake. Destroy it. Continue to the right, and you will see two spear
warriors. If you had not flipped the first switch, the warriors would be
invincible and pink in color. Since you flipped the switch, the warriors
are vulnerable and blue in color. Defeat the warriors.

Notice that the warriors are guarding a shed with a wooden door. Continue
right past the shed a short distance. When you cannot go right any further,
you will see a key. This is not one of the required ingredients, but it will
allow you to re-enter Grayskull through the Jawbridge.

Backtrack to the left and enter the shed by pressing <Up>. You will emerge
on a short ledge in Castle Grayskull - Interior Third Floor.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Interior Third Floor
*****************************************

The ledge holds an ***INGREDIENT***. Grab it. Jump down from
the ledge to the floor below. Walk to the left until you see a doorway
containing an irregular hexagon on a pedestal. That is the Ilearth Stone.
You cannot destroy it yet.

Walk to the right, making sure to dodge falling arrows. On the right
side of the room, you will reach stairs. Jump up them to reach a door.
Enter the door to reach Castle Grayskull - Interior Second Floor.

(If instead of going right, you went left, you would reach a different
door that would take you to a more advantageous position on the
second floor. However, the stairs at the door have horrible collision
detection, meaning you are highly likely to fall through the floor.)

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Interior Second Floor
*****************************************

When you emerge from the door, you will see a Snake Man on the ledge above the
door. The enemy fires an energy weapon at you. To the left is another
elevating, spinning platform. Jump onto the platform. When it reaches its
highest point, jump on the platform to the left. Ignore the snake man for now.

Jump across a gap to the next ledge to the left. Jump down to the floor below.
Continue to the left to find what look like a vertical energy trap that turns
on and off. The devices is actually a teleporter. Walk into it when it is on.
You will appear on the ledge directly above the teleporter.

Jump across the next two gaps to the left. To make the first jump hold down
<Up> throughout the jump. To the lower-left, you will see a spinning platform.
Approach the left of the ledge. When the leading edge of the spinning
platform is right below your foot, walk off the ledge and land on the
platform. This method is more precise than jumping.

When the platform reaches the next ledge, jump off. It helps if you hold
<Left> when you hit <Fire>. Now you will see another spinning platform. It
traces out a square path in the clockwise direction. Jump on the platform
just before it reaches its lowest point near you. Ride the platform to the
upper-left of its path. Pick up the ***INGREDIENT***.

Jump onto the platform. The jump is easiest when the platform is on its lower
horizontal path and coming toward you. Ride the platform to the upper-right of
its path.

(The jump from the ledge to the platform is extremely difficult. Buggy
collision detection means that you will likely fall through the platform. If
you do, you will re-spawn at the beginning of the second floor. Make your
way back to the platform and jump to the ledge with the snake ornaments.)

Jump off the platform onto a ledge surrounded by snake ornaments.
There is a door on the platform. Enter it. You will emerge in Castle
Grayskull - Interior Third Floor.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Interior Third Floor
*****************************************

The goal is to return to the beginning of the second floor. Jump up the
stairs. Walk all the way to the right of this room. You will pass the Ilearth
Stone again. Dodge falling arrows. Jump up the stairs to the door on the right
side of the room, and enter the door. You will emerge at Castle Grayskull -
Interior Second Floor.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Interior Second Floor
*****************************************

When you emerge from the door, you will see a Snake Man on the ledge above the
door. Previously, you ignored the Snake Man; now you get to attack the it.
Ride the spinning platform up and jump to the ledge to the left. Attack the
Snake Man by firing an energy bolt from your sword.

If you do not have the energy to shoot a bolt, you will have to jump over to
the Snake Man. In the worst case, you could jump into the Snake man and
sacrifice some of your body shield.

Defeating the Snake Man causes a platform to descend from the ceiling into a
gap between ledges. A blue enemy rides the platform. The reason why you needed
to ignore the Snake Man earlier is to allow you to jump across the gap
without worrying about the blue enemy or landing on the platform.

SPECTRUM DIFFERENCE: There is a switch above the Snake Man. The switch
probably lowers the platform in the Spectrum version.

Ride the platform up to reach Castle Grayskull - Exterior Roof.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Exterior Roof
*****************************************

Walk all the way to the right side of the roof. There you will find an
***INGREDIENT***.

You ran past two towers. Backtrack to the left tower, and enter it.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Left Tower
*****************************************

Inside the tower are two levels, and you start at the lower level. Walk to
the right, defeat the enemy, and go through the door. This will take you to
the window of the upper level. Walk to the right, defeat the next enemy,
and go through the next door.

This door takes you to Castle Grayskull - Skeletor's Room.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Skeletor's Room
*****************************************

Under no circumstances should you touch Skeletor or attack him with your sword
at this point. If you do, not only will you fail to defeat him, but you will
lose all of your remaining lives and have to start over.

Skeletor walks back and forth along the floor. There is an ingredient on a
ledge that is a little bit higher than the floor Skeletor walks on. This
means you should be able to grab the ***INGREDIENT*** without risking contact
with Skeletor.

Go back to the left and walk down the stairs to reach the inside of the left
tower.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Left Tower
*****************************************

You start at the upper-right. Defeat the enemy, go left, and enter the
window by pressing <Up> - yes, the window. This takes you to the door at the
lower-right of the tower. Defeat the enemy, and go left to exit the screen.

This takes you to Castle Grayskull - Exterior Roof.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Exterior Roof
*****************************************

Walk to the right and enter the right tower.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Right Tower
*****************************************

The inside of the right tower is the same as the inside of the left tower.

Inside the tower are two levels, and you start at the lower level. Walk to
the right, defeat the enemy, and go through the door. This will take you to
the window of the upper level. Walk to the right, defeat the next enemy,
and go through the next door.

This door takes you to Castle Grayskull - Orko's Room.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Orko's Room
*****************************************

Orko floats left and right along the floor. An enemy fires bolts at you.
Dodge the bolts, and touch Orko. If you have all and only the six correct
ingredients, Orko upgrades your sword to ATOM SMASHER. In the display,
the ingredients inventory is replaced with a graphic of the sword.

(If you touch Orko with an incorrect set of ingredients, you will lose all
of your ingredients and have to start over. You do not die - you just have
to restart your collection.)

Now that you have the upgraded sword, you need to destroy the Ilearth Stone.
Recall that the Ilearth Stone is on the third floor, which is accessible
from the second floor or the shed outside Grayskull. (If you have lives to
spare, you can save some time by falling through floors.)

I prefer the route that has the fewest jumps made problematic by collision
detection issues.

Go back to the left and walk down the stairs to reach the inside of the right
tower.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Right Tower
*****************************************

You start at the upper-right. Defeat the enemy, go left, and enter the
window by pressing <Up> - yes, the window. This takes you to the door at the
lower-right of the tower. Defeat the enemy, and go left to exit the screen.

This takes you to Castle Grayskull - Exterior Roof. Walk to the left and go
down the brown indentation in the castle wall to go to the second floor.

SPECTRUM DIFFERENCE: The indentation is red.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Interior Second Floor
*****************************************

You arrive at the door in the lower-right of the room, below the Snake Man.
Go through the door to go to Castle Grayskull - Interior Ground Floor.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Interior Ground Floor
*****************************************

You arrive at the door in the lower-right of the room, next to a switch. Go
left, using the platform and ledges you used three times before until you
reach the arched doorway. Go through the arched doorway to go outside
Grayskull.

*****************************************
Outside Grayskull
*****************************************

Just as you did during the first time you exited the castle, go right and
jump over a gap. Recall that it is safest to make the jump at the lowest
point on the screen. Attack the snake and two blue warriors. Enter the shed
by pressing <Up>. You arrive at Castle Grayskull - Interior Third Floor.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Interior Third Floor
*****************************************

You emerge on the third floor on a ledge where you previously found an
ingredient. Jump off the ledge to the left. Walk to the left until you reach
the Ilearth Stone. Recall that the stone is an irregular hexagon on a
pedestal.

Walk up to the Ilearth Stone and attack it with your upgraded sword. The
Ilearth Stone disappears, rendering Skeletor vulnerable. All that is left
is to return to Skeletor's room and defeat him.

Walk all the way to the right, and jump up some stairs to reach a door that
will take you to the second floor.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Interior Second Floor
*****************************************

You emerge at the door below the Snake Man. Jump on the elevating platform,
and ride it to the ledge above. Jump off it, and attack the Snake Man. As
before, this lowers a platform with a blue enemy on it. Defeat the blue
enemy, and jump on the platform. Ride the platform up to reach Castle
Grayskull - Exterior Roof.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Exterior Roof
*****************************************

Walk to the right and enter the left of the two towers. You emerge in the
lower-left of the tower. Defeat the first enemy, walk right, and enter the
door. You emerge at the window in the upper-left of the tower. Defeat the
second enemy, and enter the door. This door takes you to face Skeletor.

*****************************************
Castle Grayskull - Skeletor's Room
*****************************************

In Skeletor's room, notice that there is an arched doorway containing what
looks like a computer terminal or, perhaps, a throne. This is just for
decoration; ignore it. Approach Skeletor, and attack him once with your
upgraded sword.

If you did not have the upgraded sword, and you attacked Skeletor, your
ingredients inventory would be replaced with "TRY AGAIN". Since you do have
the upgraded sword, the inventory is replaced with "CAPTURED". Skeletor
vanishes.

SPECTRUM DIFFERENCE: The screen switches to a solid black background with
white text that reads

THE ARCADE GAME
HE-MAN(TM) AND THE
MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE(TM)
IN THE ILEARTH STONE

Deep beneath Snake Mountain, in the evil caverns, Skeletor(TM),
Arch-Enemy of He-Man(TM) has discovered the powerful
ILEARTH STONE.

Using its mighty magic, he has overthrown Castle Grayskull(TM),
banished the Sorceress(TM) and created an army of evil clones for
the final assault on the Palace, thus bringing his plans to be
Lord of all Eternia to fruition!

You, as He-Man(TM), must take up the challenge and enter
Castle Greyskull(TM) to destroy the STONE from which
Skeletor(TM) draws his invincible magical strength - only then
can you succeed in battle with the enemy of your land.

The way is treacherous - Skeletor(TM) has guarded the STONE
with magic and the force of his army of clones.

In trying to defend the Castle, Orko(TM) has let loose an
'imprison' spell upon Skeletor(TM) - but the spell rebounded
against the impenetrable force field which Skeletor(TM) has
bound around himself - with disasterous results. Orko(TM) is now
imprisoned by his own spell and helpless within one of the
many stone towers of Castle Grayskull(TM). Only his magic can
help the might of He-Man(TM). You must search out the little
magician and provide him with the CORRECT ingredients to
conjure the spell you require. The spell to turn the Sword of
Power into ATOM SMASHER!

Might goes hand in hand with right as YOU fight against the
Lord of Destruction. The struggle continues -
BUT WHO WILL WIN???
