Gamefreak has maintained that mainline pokemon games will always be on handhelds.

The fact that it's on the switch is telling about how Nintendo and GF perceive the switch as the next iteration of their handheld line.

There’s no 3ds successor. It’s releasing on switch because Nintendo doesn’t want to produce 3ds games anymore
