I know Crystal is color only but could you really play the other 2 gen 2 games on the old blocky Game Boys and Game Boy Pocket?
Currently playing on SNES Classic: Super Mario Kart, Earthbound, Donkey Kong Country.
I broke up with my girlfriend so please stop asking me about it!

Nothing was different. It was Pokemon Silver. No colour didn't somehow make it a drastically different experience.

Yep. They also supported Super Game Boy. I know Nintendo pushed for the Game Boy Color at the time, but Pokemon Crystal was a step back in that regard.
Whoever started using the word "canon" in this context, anyway?

Same! I loved my GB Pocket. I remember when I got my GBC, which was probably the first time I got something so close to release, I wanted them to have a GBC Pocket so badly. In my defense, I hated using my brother's MASSIVE OG GB, so I was very worried the GBCs would be that size.
Currently Playing: Star Wars: Battlefront II (XONE); Overwatch (XONE); Pokemon Blue (GB); The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (GBA); RuneScape (PC)

I played Gold all through my final year of high school, burned a load of batteries out during spare periods. Yes I played it on a traditional Game Boy.

Wow, I didn't know until this topic that the Gameboy Pocket exists. Now I need to have one.

Birdo deserves a bigger role in the Mario series!
