Was it because the lack of a control stick or something at the time?

Honestly I don't think the controls specifically are that bad. I like the game, but I think the physics more so than anything can make it a frustrating time, especially compared to the original.

A lot of gamers tend to hate remakes a lot.

Mechanically 64DS is the weaker game. It's not just about lack of analog (although I found the thumbstrap surprisingly endearing) - the addition of new characters throws a wrench in the game's platforming which wasn't designed around them. So it's not as tight as 64. Huge chunks of the game that required precision in 64 simply don't in 64DS due to the fuzzy jumps of Yoshi and Luigi. The new stuff in 64DS is nice but not enough to really offset this fact. Although I do appreciate the effort.

Complaining about enemy designs is mostly nostalgia, but there are valid arguments to consider the original superior.
Anyone can believe in the truth. To believe in nonsense is a demonstration of loyalty... it serves as a uniform.
And if you have a uniform, you have an army.

For me, I wanted the Super Mario 64 experience. And that was lacking in my view. The camera angles didn’t feel right, and I could care less in playing as Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario.

don't hate 64DS, thought it was solid. Luigi completely breaks the game, but is so fun to use.

hated the bowser battles forcing you to use stylus controls. didn't think a lack of an analog stick was all that bad, controlled well enough without it

Is it bad that I could actually swing him around with the D-Pad, lol
