Everyone remembers the insurmountable demand for a Wii that was unable to be met for a good 2 years in many regions.
All Wii hardware in stock would be sold out, often in a matter of 2-3 hours each shipment.
However, the Wii had to get momentum prior to its release to get people riled up about it. Several demonstrations, press releases, and hearsay, along with excellent marketing on Nintendo's part got the very high demand for the Wii.
The 3DS on the other hand seems to selling itself to an instantly high demand with almost no effort on Nintendo's part.
Given proper marketing i think the 3DS could be sold out for as many as 3 and a half years.
It's likely they will be making more then they had for the wii. For the wii, most stores only got about 7-8 wii's every week for like the first year. I don't think the 3DS will be like that though. The regular DS was very plentiful when it came out and many stores had tons of them (although the pink ones always took a little longer to sell all of).
Anyways, when it first comes out, the strategy I have noticed to get yourself one (and I mean on the first day of release) is to go to a store like Zellers (not sure if it's only a canadian store). It carries good amount of gaming products but isn't thought of as a gaming store. So you won't be dealing with as big of a line and therefore, less hassle.
After a month, if you can't get one. You're best bet would be to get them through a Futureshop/Bestbuy. They usually carry TONS of any popular gaming product. They are almost always overstocked (although the Wii was an exception).

so long as you reserve it before the mainstream media gets a hold of it, you should be fine... I remember when the wii was first open for preorders there were less than 20 people in line. Then the mainstream media picked up on it.... at the same toys r us that I reserved it at, on release day, there were 300+ people waiting in line..... I showed up with my reserve ticket 15 minutes before the doors opened and was let at the front of the line.... There were about 5 reps from Nintendo on hand too.... It was quite the frenzy... I would imagine the buzz would be about the same as the GBA... I only found out they released it once I saw it on a news report...
Playing "football" w/ hands, Bush elected into office (twice!), non-metric system, toothless gun carrying idiots. Oh yeah, we got our **** together...
