The absolute omission from the 35th anniversary direct and collection says it all really.

Not a good look for Galaxy 2, getting the Hotel Mario treatment.

I put some thought into why they did it, and after seeing the tone they were going for it makes complete sense. The point of the montage was an evolution or progression of mario games, each different than the last. Not necessarily evolution in quality but in tone or design direction. Galaxy 1 and 2 are VERY similar games. 2 is essentially a continuation of 1 in many ways, not a new style of mario game in the slightest. Showing two games that look like they could take place within the same game didn't fit the theme they were going for. And they didn't include every mario game every made in the direct anyway, just the traditional 2D and 3D platforming games.
