"PLYMOUTH, MICHIGAN - October 12, 2010 - Stardock Entertainment, developer and publisher of award-winning PC games, announced today that Derek Paxton has joined the studio as senior producer and will oversee Stardock's ongoing development and expansions of the recently released fantasy strategy game, Elemental: War of Magic (www.elementalgame.com). Paxton is the creator and lead designer of the Fall from Heaven series of fantasy strategy games. Prior to joining Stardock, he was an external consultant for Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword and contributed to several of Firaxis's games including the recent Civilization V. "This is the opportunity to marry my professional project manager career with my passion for game design," said Paxton. "I'm especially excited to work with the talented people at Stardock who have always been focused on creating great PC strategy games. "Fall From Heaven".. seems to tie in well with Stardock and Elemental after GalCiv. I only hope he knows what he's up against, who he's working for, and the mess he has to begin unraveling. If his outlook on the game (at launch and since) is jaded in any way, he'll have a really rough ride the entire time he's there. Reality can be a harsh mistress. |
Jaga_Telesin posted... No kidding. Getting paid for what you love doing can be a real drag. Jaga_Telesin posted... One of the best development companies in the industry? Yeah, I'm pretty sure he knew that when he accepted the job. Jaga_Telesin posted... I agree, having to fill out all the paperwork when starting a new job can be pain, but I expect he'll manage. Anyway, congrats to Kael. The future of Elemental keeps looking brighter and brighter! :D |
dzimm posted... Jaga_Telesin posted... One of the best development companies in the industry? Yeah, I'm pretty sure he knew that when he accepted the job. Ah, no. By that I meant a company (and CEO) who were blind enough to think their complete mess of a game was ready for release. They have no good milestones nor judgement with which to estimate where the game stands, and clearly they ignore feedback from their beta testers. I'd hardly call a company with these idiosyncrasies one of the best dev companies in the industry. They are going to have a rough ride no matter what, and I hope he has a job waiting elsewhere if/when the bombs fall. Sure, it could do well in the long (very long) run. Based on everything we've seen, and the stranglehold the CEO has had on it (and their communication with the community) the news is meh at best. |

One of the best development companies in the industry? Are you ^&%^^% kidding? You've said a lot of nutty bat **** crazy stuff in the pas,t but this one take the cake. Sad that they need a an amateur modder to fix their game. The modding community has more talent then the so called "professionals". |

LOL@Brad. |
I find it humorous that I'm called a troll for pointing out the obvious (and things Brad himself has stated). When you can no longer logically and rationally argue your stance, flinging poo is the next best option, eh Dzimm? :D Once more, I find the news very "meh" in terms of immediate impact for the game and the community that plays it. Long term it may flesh out to mean something, as he may take more of a role than Brad has had in the past. He is still working for someone who has a vision, and who thought that vision was fulfilled in a "complete game ready to ship" that was nowhere near it. I see it more as a marketing move - telling the community that "we're putting someone in charge who has done good things in the past, so there's a brighter future for Elemental". Really it means little, since Brad himself has done good things in the past (GalCiv), and still failed with Elemental out of the gate. Adding someone to the team effectively means nothing until he produces in a positive (and large) way. They are still in damage control mode over there, churning out positive press and patch after patch in an effort to redeem part of the market they lost. The true measure of whether the game is going to succeed, is IF it succeeds. Six months after launch if the patches truly mean something, gamers may go dust off their copies or buy new ones off the shelf and actually enjoy the updated game. Or not. We cannot possibly make a positive assumption simply based off a news release about a new team member. Doing so is blind faith, which equates to religion. |
