So this is my situation: I play tryndamere exclusively so I'm not going to just counterpick him. I know it's putting me at a disadvantage but I would rather learn to conquer him than avoid him. I've been banning malphite if I'm 1st or 2nd pick (common counterpick I dislike), and banning Darius if I'm 3rd-5th pick (common blind pick my team always feeds even if I don't), so there's no room to ban Shen. The last 3 games I've played against Shen (within the last 2 days), I've done rather poorly in lane and need to step it up if I'm going to be serious about climbing.

FoggedFTW has a matchup sheet for most every champion, but I find his Shen commentary to be of little use. He seems to assume a passive-until-provoked Shen when giving tips - which does little when I find that I'm eating huge damage from aggressive Shens just approaching the wave each time as soon as he gets all his abilities. Fogged's primary advice is to avoid all-ins until level 4 (when Trynd gets his W), to avoid getting hit by the sword, and avoiding letting Shen walk behind you and taunting through you.

In theory, I would play around his sword such that I do not commit to a fight until he has moved his sword (not letting it hit me) and used his W. In reality, I seem to be taking too much damage from his autos in short trades even when the sword does not hit me. If I go for an extended trade (since he only has 3 empowered autos per Q), he can walk behind me and taunt through me, forcing me to eat a lot of minion aggro and making me want to burn my dash to disengage since I'll be at the mercy of his Q again soon - and won't likely be in a good position to avoid the sword. Avoiding the sword is not something I have been consistently doing, does anyone know if it can "hit" if you stand right next to Shen but not perfectly between him and the sword initial position?

He has quite solid early damage, and still hurts even after a couple backs since Trynd builds glass cannon usually. It's irritating how much damage Shen does while building full tank + tiamat. I cannot rush a last whisper, but he can rush bramble/wardens/sunfire/tabis whatever he wants and basically wins every trade. Even the times when I get a auto-e free trade on him feel super weak as soon as he buys armor (especially considering his periodic shield). Magic resist, I have found, is a poor purchase early on, as it only diminishes trading power further over buying AD and doesn't even help you stay in lane to simply farm like it does for matchups like Teemo.

Generally Shen should counter Tryndamere fairly well in the early game. And by the nature of Shens kit he should be able to deal with your split pushes as he can stop you but still be able to help his team since you have no hard cc to stop his ult.
Gameplay wise you really need to force Shen to use his abilities by provoking him. Shen has no trouble just playing passively since he's made to be defensive.

Shen seems to be a hard counter to Trynd.

If you can clear faster than him, I'd say bait him into ulting to another lane by faking a roam or just steal the enemy jungler's farm.
I once had a dream where Vulpix was playable in Smash. I fully support this now.

Push and roam, Shen has no waveclear early until he gets tiamat and bami's

Just hard shove into him and invade his jungler and make their life hell, you aren't going to be winning 1v1 vs shen early

Alternatively play like a b**** until 6 since he has a non-combative ultimate and you should more than easily outsustain him due to how cancerous your Q is

How do I deal with Shen himself, if I shove I doubt he's going to stand by and watch.

Spin away from him anytime he tries anything? It's not like his dash is costless and gets its CD refunded when he crits on a champion who rushes CDR

you are playing tryn and worrying about a lane matchup versus shen XD! Just hit minions and ignore him all game? you never need to try to kill him and if he ever goes on you, spin away and repeat hitting minions.
