I got xcom years ago and not only did it totally disappear from my account, it apparently hasn't been updated in years and therefore barely works (if at all).

Great game, but non-functional.

monster hunter stories seems nice, but it never got the updates (neither did the 3ds version either apparently) and reviews say it isn't very stable anymore.

So are there any games for the platform that work well on ipad (I have the latest model pro so it should run everything), are enjoyable/worthwhile, and not pay to win? Ideally with little to no microtransactions at all.

Genre doesn't matter too much to me, just anything that stands out.

Swordigo’s lovely, albeit aged
Journey’s a classic
and Alto’s Adventure/Odyssey are pretty lauded in terms of iOS exclusives

Oceanhorn, Star Wars kotor, jade empire and the final fantasy games are ones I enjoy.

If you enjoy strategy games, then the ones by Feral Interactive are pretty good.

Company of Heroes, Rome Total War and Barbarian Invasion are the ones I played.

Any more? I tried some gatcha games (seems like I can't find any games that aren't) and I have to say I hate the formula.

There's quite a few substantial, well-done non-gacha games on iOS that work well with the inputs/hardware... prepare to see pricey though, because avoiding gacha trash tends to come with a (sometimes steep) initial cost.

• Grimvalor
• Chaos Rings III
• Republiqué
• Street Fighter IV: Championship Edition
• Wonder Worlds
• DUST
• Implosion: Never Lose Hope
• Stardew Valley
• Final Fantasy III (recently updated to work with the newer aspect ratios)
• Ravensword 2: Shadowlands
• Swords of Ditto (Excellent game, but do not play it without a controller)
• Adventure of Mana

...just to name a few. If you like those and want more, I have tons and tons more on my iPad Pro that I can recommend you.
I never realized how much battered wife syndrome Sonic fans have until I heard them say "It's surprising how well Sonic Adventure 2 aged!"
