AZ01 - ITEMS/EQUIPMENT
======================

Q : What happens if I get an item when my inventory is full ?
A :
You can buy it the next time you enter a shop, whether in IW, HV, or LoC. If you don't buy it the first time you enter, it will be gone forever.

==============

Q : What is the best weapon/armor/whatever, and how do I get it?
A :
Generally speaking, the higher the rank of equipment the better base stats it starts with, so r40 equipment represents the best equipment in the game. There is a great chart at GameFAQs which shows the name and rank of every item found in the game.

R40 equipment of particular note include:

HUMANOID WEAPONS
Yoshi - Decent ATK, good AoE skills.
Apocalypse - Colossal ATK stat, good multiplier on Calamity Drive skill.
Ultimus - Versatile weapon. Good attacks which are Fire elemental based.
Omni Rod - Highest INT stat + staff bonuses.

MONSTER WEAPONS
Babylon Crown - Highest ATK monster weapon.
The Fool - Highest INT monster weapon.

ARMOR
SRS - Highest DEF, well-rounded stats.

ACCESSORIES
Makai Wars - Highest ATK/INT boosting accessory.
Usagi's Journal - Second highest INT boosting accessory.
Felicitation - Second highest ATK boosting accessory.
Accelerator - Navigational capabilities. Naturally has 3x MOV and 30 Jump (Can be boosted to 6x MOV using MOV bills.

Q : What is Rarity ?
A :
Each item has its own "Rarity" number, which can be found in the game. Normal, Rare and Legendary items all have different rarity ranges.

Rarity: 0-7 = Legendary
Rarity: 8-31 = Rare
Rarity: 32-255 = Normal

Innocent Town can be reached on any floor that is a multiple of ten except floor 100. There is about a 50-50 chance that you will get there or be given the option to: Continue through Item World or return to town. It is still available as long as you haven't seen the Chicken the maximum number of times. The "I want to change the item name" proposal costs nothing and you can do it as many times as you want as long as you can get to Innocent Town.

The "Collector" specialist INCREASES an item's rarity by +1 per level of the specialist and can even bring it over 255. If an item's Rarity is brought out of its normal range it does NOT change from Legendary to Rare or Rare to Normal.

==============

Q : What is Rarity Matching ?
A :
When two items equipped have the same rarity number you get +10% of both items' stats. When three items have the same rarity you get +20% of all three items' stats. When four items have the same rarity you get +30% of all four items' stats. Perfect items have huge stats so it is important that you have them matching rarity with your other equipment. This is done by getting to the 100th floor and resetting until you get the rarity you want. If you don't have a particular preference as to the Rarity then just choose 0 since certain items can be forced to have Rarity 0 by skipping the story.

==============

Q : What rarity should I match my equipment at ?
A :
You can match rarity at what ever level you choose, but I suggest to use Rarity 0 because it's a nice number and you can force the MW and Accelerators to be spawned at level 0 by skipping the second scene when you obtain the MW and using the DoE method for getting the Accelerator.

==============

Q : What's that deal with Item Gods having the next best item ?
A :
For whatever item you're in, EXCEPT r39s and r40s, the Item God of that item will have the next ranked item of that type. Items that jump ranks (e.g., muscles, eyewear) can not be obtained from Item Gods of previous ranks unless it happens to randomly appear on them. R39 Item Gods don't carry r40 equipment unless you're in LoC. In both HV and LoC, r40 Item Gods will carry r40 items (the same item type you are in).

==============

Q : Are there any 'one-time-only' items ?
A :
There are items of which you can only have one at a time, but there are no 'missables' because you can always start a NG+ and get one. One at a time items include:

- Sexy Panties
- DoE ID Card
- Postcard
- Gao's Spirit
- Claudia's Charm
- Kitty's Ears
- Prinny Suit
- Makai Wars
- Felicitation

If you incorrectly leveled one of these items or got the wrong rarity, you can delete it, start a NG+ and get it again. These are all r40 items and are not parts of categories that contains other ranks. In truth, you do not have to outright start a whole new cycle. If, on your current cycle, you haven't done the mission for that particular item, you can delete your item and do the mission again to get it.

AZG02 - CHARACTERS
==================

Q : How do I unlock new classes ?
A :
Each Humanoid class that you don't start with requires a bill to be passed for the first tier to be unlocked. Each bill has certain requirements. The requirements are here:

HEAVY KNIGHT : Level 3 Spear Mastery
GUNNER : Level 5 Gun Mastery
KUNOICHI : Level 5 Fist & Staff Mastery.
MALE NINJA : Level 5 Sword & Fist Mastery.
SAMURAI : Level 5 Sword Mastery.
RUNE KNIGHT : Level 3 Sword & Staff Mastery.
GEOMANCER : Perform a 500+ Geo Combo.
SINNNER : Get a felony (you HAVE to do this in chapter 3).
BEASTMASTER : Capture a monster.
MAJIN : Beat the final boss and start a new cycle. Short cut bills do not count, you have to do it the real way.

When it asks for you to have a certain level of Mastery for two different weapon types, they don't have to be on the same character to make the bill appear.

==============

Q : How do I unlock the higher tiers ?
A :
You have to have a character of the previous tier at a certain level to unlock the next tier. The exact levels can be found in multiple guides at GameFAQs.

==============

Q : Do the classes/tiers ever get relocked, like after a NG+ ?
A : No, once you unlock a class/tier, it stays unlocked.

==============

Q : How come I can't change the class of story characters ?
A : Story characters are fixed to their own unique class and they don't have higher tiers.

==============

Q : Are thieves worth the trouble ?
A :
Yes. They can steal much easier than other classes and aren't limited to a 50% steal chance. Thief Lovers also tremendously increase the chance of a successful steal for a Thief.

==============

Q : What's the best class ?
A :
The best class is most commonly thought to be the Rune Knight (or Magic Knight) because of the +75% elemental damage with 25 lovers. Elemental Spells do the most damage because they have the most multipliers, so the boosted damage enables them to do more damage in one hit than any other character. The Kunoichi class can do slightly more damage than a Rune Knight over two hits (using their double attack ability), but if you're going extremely uber and all, the first hit will kill them anyway, so there's really no point. The reason these classes are thought of as so great is because once you reach the stat cap at 40 million, you won't be doing any extra damage unless your character has abilities that allow such a thing. These characters' abilities have the potential for the most damage.

==============

Q : What's the best monster ?
A :
I never really used monsters, but I can say Wood Golems are pretty cool for their high ATK, DEF and HP, as well as their decent Counter. Rocs can lower enemy stats up to a maximum of 50%. It's really all your decision what monsters you want to use.

=============

Q : How many characters can I have ?
A : 128 total: 12 story characters and 116 generics. If you don't have all the story characters unlocked yet, the game will reserve a spot for them, so you can't make extra generics or anything.

AZG03 - ITEM WORLD
==================

Q : What is the Item World ?
A :
The IW is a set of randomly generated dungeons you can enter to level up the stats of an Item. Each "Floor" of an item is a randomly generated map that may contain enemies, GeoPanels, GeoSymbols, Treasure chests, a Base Panel, a Dimension Gate and occasionally a Mystery Gate or Court Gate. Pirates may also appear on the item mid map (Pirates will be further discussed later).

Q : How many floors does an item have ?
A :
The number of floors, and the initial stats, of an item is determined by the "Rarity" of the item.

Legendary: Floors = 100; Max Chicken Encounters = 3; Natural POP Limit = 6; x1.5 of Normal's stats
Rare: Floors = 60; Max Chicken Encounters = 2; Natural POP Limit = 5; x1.25 of Normal's stats
Normal: Floors = 30; Max Chicken Encounters = 1; Natural POP Limit = 4

==============

Q : Wow, 100 floors in a Legendary item !!! Do I need to go through all floors at once ?
A : No. You can exit and reenter whenever you want, and it won't change anything unless you're in the middle of killing a boss.

==============

Q : How can I leave the IW ?
A :
There are only 3 ways which you can leave the IW once you have entered it.

1) Using a Mr. Gency Exit during a Battle (You cannot use it while in a Mystery Gate unless you pick a fight with the vendor)
2) You get the option of leaving the IW every 10 floors
3) You die and get the Game Over screen

==============

Q : What is an Item God and where can I find it ?
A :
An item God is a special unit similar to majin class that is found only on the 100th floor of an item. An Item God 2 is reserved for the 100th floor of a r40 item.

==============

Q :
I'm in the LoC IW and the enemies have these weird Geo Symbol things above their heads. What's going on ?
A :
There is a pretty good chance that in LoC IW you will encounter a map with enemies that also act as Geo Symbols. Every panel they step on will become the color of the Geo Symbol floating above their head. You cannot remove the Geo Symbol. If their Geo Effect is Invincibility, you will have to move them to another location and kill them before they move. Paralyze can help with this.

==============

Q : I'm stuck on a floor with an unreachable exit (or enemy) !
A :
Depending on the situation, you can try to...

1) Lift-throw your characters
2) Use attacks that have a wide range (such as high-level spells)
3) Use attacks that transport your characters
4) Use a Mr Gency Exit and reenter; the floor will be different
5) Use the Geo Change ability of a Geomancer

==============

Q : How can I get some Mr. Gency's Exits ?
A :
A Mr. Gency's Exit is the 1st prize in the Bonus List in each X0th floor map (e.g., floors 10, 20, 30, etc.)
So, the ONLY way to get a Gency is to CLEAR a X0th floor of an item (You don't get one for skipping through to the dimension gate). You cannot buy them from any of the shops. You cannot get them in the Bonus List of any other map. You can actually get ONE in chapter 3 as part of the story.

Q : What's the fastest way to travel through Item World ?
A :
First, you'll need an IW runner. You can use either Tink or a Mothman. You'll need to pass three (3) MV bills for a monster weapon, obtain three (3) Accelerators and pass three (3) MV bills on each. You'll also need to get a level 20 Lover for whichever one you're using. You'll also have to put the Mothman in critical status (HP <= 25%) if that's what you're using.

Tink
Natural = 5 (Total = 5)
Blue Form = +2 (Total = 7)
DA MV Bill = +1 (Total = 8)
MV Weapon = +3 (Total = 11)
Accelerator = +6 (Total = 17)
Accelerator = +6 (Total = 23)
Accelerator = +6 (Total = 29)
Lover Bonus = +2 (Total = 31)

Mothman
Natural = 6 (Total = 6)
In-Critical = +1 (Total = 7)
DA MV Bill = +1 (Total = 8)
MV Weapon = +3 (Total = 11)
Accelerator = +6 (Total = 17)
Accelerator = +6 (Total = 23)
Accelerator = +6 (Total = 29)
Lover Bonus = +2 (Total = 31)

As you can see, they both can have 31 MV maximum. That's higher than any other classes. They also have the flying ability that allows them to go through enemies. Once you have one of these you'll be able to run straight to the gate of almost any IW stage in a single turn. Of course, you'll have to take out the GateKeeper, so make a staff-user or bow-user with lots of range and decent stats so they can snipe him/her from far away. Ideally, you should go through every IW stage in one turn and no more than thirty seconds.

==============

Q : What is the purpose of the Mystery Gate ?
A :
Every time you enter the Mystery Gate you will encounter a different event/vendor. This includes various shops (Item Shop, Mana shop, Cell Phone Prinny), a "Brothel" (You will know it when you see it), Treasure chests (Can be guarded by a Dragon), a Dojo that sells Weapon Scrolls, Pirates, and events which raise the level of your item (7 Monsters which you need to fight/kill in 2 turns; to pass the test or a Fortune Teller which will increase/decrease the level of your item depending on the fortune it gives (-10/-3/+3/+10 levels for Terrible Luck/Bad Luck/Good Luck/Great Luck respectively)

==============

Q : How do I level up an item in the IW ?
A :
There are 4 main factors that permanently increase the stats/properties of an item while you are leveling it up, which are:
1) The level of the item. Each time you clear a floor the level of the item increases too. The level of the item can also be increased by the "7 Monster" and "Fortune Teller" mystery gates.
2) Passing Item Bills to increase various stats, or other factors such as MV, Jump, Counter or Critical hit frequency
3) Killing the Item Bosses (e.g., Item General/King/God)
4) Having stat boosting specialists in the item when Item Bosses are killed

==============

Q : Do I need to kill all enemies on each floor while leveling up an item ?
A :
No. The only enemies you need to kill in order to maximize the stat gain when levelling an item are the Item Generals/Kings/Gods you encounter on floors divisible 10 (e.g., 10, 20, 30, 40). Killing an Item King or an Item God will also increase the max number of Residents for this item (no item can have more than 8 POP slots).

========================
AZG04 - PERFECTING ITEMS
========================

A Perfect Item Guide is already available at GameFAQs, as well as other sites, but it will be covered anyway.

==============

Q : How do I level/perfect an item ?
A :
The easiest way to describe the process is to choose an example, so I will use a Yoshi.

1) Decide what stat you want to focus on for the Item. Most weapons have an obvious stat to focus on (e.g., ATK for Yoshi/Ultimus/Apocalypse, INT for the Omniscient Rod, HIT for Lovely Cupid). ATK or INT are generally focused on for the Makai Wars. The SRS is very versatile, and is perfected for INT/ATK/DEF/HP depending on the user. So a Yoshi would be perfected for ATK.

2) Remove the specialists present in the item and fill it up with Gladiators. There is a stat boost based on the presence of specialists in the item. The stat boost is independent of the level of the specialist (e.g., 4x level 100 gladiators will give more of a stat boost than 1x 19998). If the Yoshi contains 2 specialists, say a Gladiator and a Sentry, then you will want to subdue both specialists on the 1st floor and remove the Sentry, replacing it with Gladiators so there are 6 present. This involves saving the game, entering the Yoshi, subduing a specialist if one is present or reloading if one is not.

3) You should aim on boosting the level of the item 3 times/10 floors. This involves entering the Mystery gate 3 times and getting either the "7 Monsters" or the Fortune Teller and getting good/great luck for 3/10 levels boost each. A mystery gate can show after 3 floors have passed WITHOUT a mystery gate showing. Some people say that you MUST get the 3 mystery gates on floors 1, 4 and 7, but I am more flexible and work on the basis that you have 2 floors to get 1 of the gates and 1 floor to get the other 2 (e.g., if you get the level boost on floor 2, then you must get the other 2 boosts on floors 5 and 8, if you get your first 2 boosts on floors 1 and 4 then you can get the last boost on floors 7 or 8). This just gives a lil' more flexibility to the leveling. Just make sure you dont get a mystery gate on Floor 9 otherwise you will need to pass 3 AT LEAST 3 floors on another item to be able to get the gate to appear on 1st floor for the next 10 floor set. In the end you will need 2 Great Luck fortune tellers to reach the 200 level mark by the 100th floor.

4) You MUST double kill the Item Generals/Kings/Gods. Killing these bosses give a SIGNIFICANT stat boost to the item. Double killing these bosses involves entering the 10th floor, killing the boss, Gencying out, Saving the game, reentering the item and killing the boss again. A double kill is possible because the stat boost depends on at least one floor being cleared when the Item Boss is killed. The 1st kill is for the floors from 1-9. The second kill is for floor 10. You cannot triple kill the item boss as another floor is not cleared.

5) You must pass the bills on the 10th, 20th and 30th floors of the item! The stat boost due to the bills being passed is not retroactive, so the bills must be passed AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE (e.g., 10th, 20th and 30th floors). On the 10, 20 and 30th floors people will generally kill the Item boss, gency out, re-kill the Item Boss, then go straight to the dimension gate. IF the Innocent Town AND the DA chicken show, then great, if that does not occur then you need to reset and try again. More ATK bills would be passed on the Yoshi, for example.

6) When defeating the Item King on the 30th floor for the 1st time a new POP slot will be opened. A 7th Gladiator should be placed into the free spot before you reenter the item for the double kill, and an 8th Gladiator placed into the 8th slot after the second kill.

If you follow all of these steps then you will have a perfect item.

Q : That sounds like A LOT of work ! Do I really need to perfect an item ?
A :
The main items you should really bother perfecting are r40 weapons, SRS's, MW and UJ for Casters. Accelerators dont need to be perfected as you will be boosting their movement, not their stats. Also you will be able to beat the majority, if not all of the game with only LEVELED up equipment. The only fight you may struggle in is beating LoC UPB AFTER defeating PBP, which results in the x4 boost of the stats of all characters on the next map you enter.

==============

Q : So how do I get a LEVELED up item ?
A : You basically follow the steps outlined above except you don't bother raising the level of the item up to 200. It is advisable to still pass the item bills on the 10th, 20th and 30th floors, fill the item with a single type of specialist and double kill all of the Item Bosses. You should also be able to get 1 Mystery Gate level boost every 10 floors, meaning the final level of your item should be somewhere near 130. A Leveled item should take about 1-2 hours to make, opposed to the 4-16 hours it can take to make a perfect item.

=====================
AZG05 - REINCARNATION
=====================

Q : What's the point of reincarnating ?
A :
There are 2x main purposes for reincarnating.

1) To move a generic character up its tiers (e.g., tier 1 to tier 6). As the character moves up the tiers their aptitudes/base stats/weapon proficiencies will all increase.

2) To increase the stats of your character for the next reincarnation. Base stats can be increased in 2 ways.

a) Yellow bars, which are based off of the characters previous stats. A stat of 280,000 will give a Yellow bar capped at 40 Bonus Points.

b) Bonus Points. These are points which you can allocate to any stat you want and are based off of Stored Levels and reincarnations. You will get 200 Bonus Points for having 186,000 Stored Levels, 10 points for a Genius reincarnation and 10 points for reincarnating into the same class and tier character 10 times in a row, for a max of 220 points.

==============

Q : What's the best time/level at which to reincarnate ?
A :
I would suggest to NOT start reincarnations until the post game fun as Tier 1 characters are MORE than enough for the story missions. Even then I wouldn't start until you have at least CoO4 opened.

There are also 2 phases I would suggest to reincarnate in.

1) Reincarnate generic characters up tiers using CoO4. Then stop reincarnating until you have the LoC CoO4 open and some leveled up r40 items, then...

2) Store Levels. The stat bonus you get for stored levels is RELATIVELY small (about 1.2 mill in 1 stat), so storing levels should be one of the last things you do. Start storing levels AFTER you have your r40 items for your characters but BEFORE you max out your skill levels because your skill levels can plummet while storing levels. Storing levels is done optimally at level 1800-2200, which is 3-4 clearances of the LoC CoO4. This is the point at which leveling is quick but reincarnations won't eat into Weapon Mastery and Skill levels too much.

==============

Q :
Should I reincarnate my characters into the higher tier versions of their class or should I just create a completely new character but with as a higher tier.
A :
Reincarnate characters up tiers as their skill levels and weapon mastery will be carried over, and their base stats will increase.

======================
AZG06 - WEAPON MASTERY
======================

Q : What is the purpose of Weapon Mastery.
A :
Weapon Mastery is one of the 1st major stat boosts you can get. Weapon Mastery is earned EVERY time you swing your weapon, be it due to a normal attack, Weapon Skill attack, Counter attack or Team attack.

User Info: Prometheusx303

Prometheusx303
11 years ago#8
Q : How can I quickly boost my Weapon Mastery?
A :
The process for boosting Weapon Mastery revolves around getting 2 characters to counter each other on Reverse Damage panels to quickly raise their Weapon Mastery levels. Steps to quickly increase Weapon Mastery are...

1) Make a level 1900 Armsmaster. A level 1900 Armsmaster will take 23 "100 Fists" which can be brought from the shop. Subdue and combine them all. A Product Rank of 12 is needed for this step.

2) Make a "counter" weapon. This is done by getting a low level legendary weapon (you should get one during your travels in the IW getting the armsmasters if you don't already have one). Your goal is to pass 3x counter bills in the DA on the weapon on the 10th, 20th and 30th floors. This should not be a problem in a low rank legendary as the enemies will never be near your level.

3) Place the level 1900 Armsmasters onto the counter weapon and equip your character with it.

4) Optional step is to make a Red Monster counter weapon as above. This will be equipped onto Taro (he has the highest natural counter rate).

5) Pass counter bills on Adell and Taro in the Dark Assembly.

6) Take Adell and Taro to stage 11-3 (Shinra Tower, Death to Cowards). Clear out 2 geomancers and throw Adell and Taro onto the Reverse Damage panels. Have the 2 characters attack each other.

The 1900 Armsmasters will mean that each attack and counter attack will be worth 20 normal hits, and your weapon mastery will skyrocket very quickly.

===================
AZG07 - SPECIALISTS
===================

Contributed by LordMagus:

Specialists (also sometimes called “residents” or “innocents”) can be found on items. At first they have an angry face next to their name (indicating they are unsubdued), and a number (indicating their effect level). When you’re going through the item world, you may eventually run across an unsubdued specialist, which will be pointed out at the beginning of a level with a “Check!,” just like an Item General. The specialists’ actual level as a monster will match the other monsters on the floor you find them on, and is NOT related to their effect level.

When you find them, kill them before the other enemies do. This will “subdue” the monster. If they are killed by an enemy, a geo chain, or poison, they are not subdued, but they may appear on another floor later in the item. Once subdued, a specialist’s icon turns to a smiley face, their effect level doubles, and they can now be moved to other items.

Raise a specialist’s effect level by subduing it and/or combining it with other specialists of the same type. Below I list the maximum effect level for each specialist, but keep in mind- some specialists can be raised above their effect level maximum, but any levels above their effect level max has no effect (e.g., A level 108 professional is no more effective than a level 100 professional). Further, this maximum amount is total per character, not per item. So if you have a level 100 professional on your weapon and another on your armor, you only get the effect of a 100 professional anyway. The exception to this is the Stat specialists. Each one maxes at 19998, but you can have more than one 19998 specialist equipped and still get the full effects of each.

Let’s get the most frequently asked-about specialists out of the way first:
Collector: Increases an item’s rarity by 1 per collector level (Max 100(?)). This is useful only for matching the rarities on multiple pieces of equipment, which in turn gives a boost to the stats provided by those items. (+10% for 2 matched, +20% for 3 matched, +30% for all 4 matching). Using collectors to raise an item’s rarity will NOT change it from being Legendary or Rare.
Mediater(sic): Allows for the creation of dual-stat specialists (see below) (Max at 100). If you have a Mediater and at least two other subdued stat specialists on an item, every time you get to innocent town there’s a chance to see the Mediater “wedding” two other specialists, which in turn creates a new dual-stat specialist. The new specialist created is somewhat random, but usually it will create one that boosts the stats the parents boosted (A Gladiator and a Tutor will likely create a Hard Worker). The level of the new specialist is also somewhat random, but it is dependent on the rank of the item in which it is created (NOT on the levels of the parents or the Mediater). So best to create them in high rank items for best results. The level of the Mediater only affects the chance for the “wedding” event to occur. The item must have at least 1 free resident slot for a new specialist to be created. Dual stat specialists do NOT permanently boost the stats of an item that is being leveled up, unlike single stat specialists. Mediaters only appear on rare or legendary equipment.
Teacher: Boosts the level of another specialist by 5% (Mat at 100). Much like Mediaters, every time you get to Innocent town in an item, there is a chance you’ll see the Teacher “educating” one other random subdued specialist that is on the item. This will increase the “pupil” specialist’s level by 5%, and only 5%. The Teacher’s level only affects the chance for this event to occur. Teachers only appear on legendary equipment.
Bailiff: Dark court appears on Item Floor equal to the bailiff’s level. Only one bailiff can be on an item at any one time.

Q : How do I subdue and combine Specialists?
A :
When you look at an item you will see it contains specialists. These are unsubdued, and have an angry face. When you subdue a Specialist (beat it in battle) the face changes from an angry face to a happy face and its value doubles. When you have multiple specialists in the 1 item you can combine them into a single specialist with a combined level. 2x 20 subdued gladiators will become 1x 40 subdued specialist. However if you combine 1 subdued and 1 unsubdued specialist the subdued specialist becomes unsubdued, its level returns to its original value and you will get 1 unsubdued specialist (e.g., combining 1 subdued 20 gladiator and 1 level 10 unsubdued gladiator = the subdued level 20 gladiator becomes an unsubdued level 10 gladiator, they combine into an unsubdued level 20 gladiator) Once it is subdued its level will double to 40.

AZG08 - LOVERS
==============

Contributed by LordMagus:

Lovers are a type of specialist specific to each class and story character. They usually boost that class's innate ability (Shown in the class description), and always give at least a 1% boost to all stats per level of the lover. The lovers level and effects cap at 25, whether or not you have them on multiple pieces of equipment.

To get a lover, you must wear the SAME piece of equipment for at least 35 battles, without unequipping it. After that point, the equipment will eventually spawn a lover corresponding to the character wearing it. You must actually complete the battle for it to count towards spawning a lover- skipping stages in the item world does not count. The character must be on the field at the end of battle, not in your base panel. If you reincarnate a character into a different class without unequipping them, the battle count does not reset.

Normal equipment spawns a level 1 Lover, rare (green) equipment spawns a level 2 Lover, and legendary (yellow) equipment spawns a level 3 Lover. A piece of equipment can only spawn a lover ONCE. To spawn a lover, an item must be of rank 5 or higher (rank, not rarity). So your truly early game garbage items, like Common Orbs and Glasses, will not produce lovers. MasterVG782's FAQ and the Item List FAQ list item ranks.

You can subdue a lover like any other specialist, by entering the item world and killing it when it shows up. Lovers for the special characters will essentially be clones of that character, so be careful! They will be wearing whatever equipment their corresponding character is wearing (and no, you can't steal from them). Also note that lovers can spawn on items that have been fully leveled up. If that happens, there is no way to subdue the lover or remove it from the item, so it will use up a specialist slot forever.
