Hold Power button down for 6 seconds (while PS3 is on): turns off PS3.

Hold Eject button down for 6 seconds (while PS3 is on): force disc to eject.

Hold Eject button down for 12 seconds (while PS3 is on): reset Blu-ray.

Hold Power button down for two beeps (while PS3 is off): Reset video to lowest settings.

Hold Power button down for three beeps (while PS3 is off): Enter PS3 diagnostic mode (repeat procedure twice)
The PS3 can enter a special "Service Mode". When it does the bottom right hand corner of the screen has a red translucent rectangle with the words "Playstation 3. Factory/Service Mode" inside of the rectangle. When the PS3 is off, plugging a special "JIG" in the USB port (and then pressing Eject immediately after pressing the Power button), the PS3 is triggered into Service Mode when it boots up. This special mode then accepts firmware code loaded in from the USB port (PS3UPDAT.PUP), and allows reflashing the firmware chip, or running programs from a USB drive.

Each PS3 has a special 512KB EEPROM chip on the motherboard using a SPI Serial Interface Renasas chip.
25+ years of gaming taught me one important life lesson. You normally don't have to push start at the main menu.

Uncheck all options besides 1080p in display settings to play supported games in full 1080p HD.

You can use a custom theme's (from PSN store) icons with any background.

Because of load times it is faster to quit games by holding down the PS button, then quitting the game out of the black menu, rather than just pressing the PS button and quitting from the XMB.

The PS store use to have a much different (and arguably better) interface and ran much better. When entering through some games you'll still see this old interface.

Not necessarily secrets, but these are good to know.

Don't know if it's a "secret", but the diagnostic mode will also let you rebuild the library which is basically a defrag of a system, which can lead to better performance/stability. Just be careful you don't pick the wrong option and factory reset your system :)

to add to this-
if your disc is still stuck after trying this
turn off the ps3 then flip it over
there is a little panel that you can remove(without opening the ps3 completely)
get a screw and poke it in then turn slowly
the disc will manually eject

You don't have to be signed in to PSN to use the web browser but you do have to be signed in to use netflix or youtube.
Having a level of standards is going to open you up to criticism of hypocrisy from people with no standards.
