  3. My PS3 won't read games. Error 80010514?

I was playing Mass Effect 3's last mission, and the game froze when I was opening a door. That game freezing is nothing new since Bioware released it as half-finished buggy nonsense, but after I restarted my system it wouldn't recognize the game disc. Tried another disc (Skyrim), got error 80010514.

Movies and DVDs work fine, oddly enough. It just doesn't want to read games. Tried option 3 in safe mode like an online guide said, which did find and delete some corrupted thing but it didn't fix the 80010514 problem.

Any advice on how to fix this beyond giving Sony 200 dollars? I'd rather try fixing it at home first.

Is installing one hard?

I'm going to try just opening and cleaning the lens first, if that doesn't work then yeah it's new laser time.

Yeah sadly thats what it is, you can try to open it and see whats actually wrong. You might just need to reseat it or actually buy a new one and replace the lens. My old fat PS3 had the drive stop spinning so I would have had to replace the entire drive and figured it was just easier to buy a new one.

If you plan on playing PS3 games a couple of years from now you might be better of just getting a new one, at least it will be new and will last a LONG time compared to just fixing your current one.

Your call though, good luck with whatever you try!

does Boiware effect downloaded games????? im hearing a lot about Bio ruining disc play but I only plan to play downloaded games, just curious.

I have nothing but bad experiences with Bioware games actually running properly and would never recommend playing one to anyone ever again.

I might just suck it up and buy a new PS3, but how do I transfer my data from the current one? I'd like to keep my saved games and trophies and such, especially given I was literally on the last mission of my Mass Effect 3 insanity playthrough.

It might not actually mean your BD drive is going bad. It could just mean the insides are so dirty that it's blocking you lens. I had this exact same error about a year ago, and all I had to do was spend 10 bucks on a Torx Security Bit Set in order to open the system and clean it out.

I'd still suggest backing up your HDD before you do it, just in case.

well you do have a few options

1. put in a disc and quickly pick up and tilt your Ps3 at about a 35-45 degree angle. for some reason this does work for some people. if the Ps3 reads the game you can then gently put it back down.

2. put in one of those blue ray cd cleaner cds. they are like $10.

3. turn on your Ps3 in safe mode and do that option 3 thing though it sounds like you already tried this.

4. like someone said just buy the part off ebay and open and replace the blue ray yourself. there is a youtube vid on this so go look on there.

5. get a new Ps3. you can use the data transfer option to transfer all your data from the old Ps3 to the new one.
