It's not the look that bothers me about DkS 2, it's the game play, FROM's use of DLC, and what appears to me to be less freedom and player control over certain aspects of the game compared to the previous titles.

The game looks more like a cash in designed for mass appeal rather than player enjoyment. It's design looks like it will please a lot of people just enough to buy it, but not be good enough to keep players around after a quick play through. In other words, it'll sell but it won't be all that good.
"Cute" is a kiddy euphemism for "Sexy".
Online is the worst thing to happen to gaming.

I like how people always complain about the "bland and dead" colouring in games. Most of the times, said games are set in an urban environment, or a bland and dead environment. If you live in the city, take a look outside. What colours do you see? Very likely "bland and dead" colours like grey. If you live in a small town, like me, the colours I see are often times bland and dull. When I look at the forest behind my house, just dead green. None of that "lush and vibrant" colours people expect to see in games where they don't belong.

So quit yer yapping about the colours in a game that aren't up to your imagination levels.

They're getting away from the niche-ness of the game and casualizing it. Just to smite those die hard fanbois.

The DLC I get (even though it is still being blown out of proportion), but what gameplay changes and player freedom changes are lacking compared to Demon's and Dark?

I'm a bit worried about the director of the first two games being asked to exit (in classical Japanese business form) but I think that judging a game off 3 hours of beta gameplay is an unwise idea. If you had shown me 5-1 of Demon's Souls or Blighttown of Dark Souls I would probably say the same thing but other levels such as 2-1 through 2-3 of Demon's Souls and the Demon Ruins in Dark Souls would've changed my mind. 3 hours is the equivalent of watching 10 minutes in the middle of an epic movie, but a movie is a poor analogy because they are designed with a linear story and exposition.

That area did look boring but there have been a lot of boring looking places in the Souls series.

There's a couple things.

The first plays into the DLC. Both the previous games allow any player access to all the game content. There's no special treatment with regard to content. There's no...vanity content...like the DLC appears to be. The kind of...stuff, that while it may or may not be useful or awesome, it's just there for showing off or vanity and only certain players that preorder will ever end up getting. I don't really care if it's meaningless or optional, or just palette swaps of what we already have, that's not important. It's the restriction of access to content that bothers me. A small issue I know, but it's one that bothers the hell out of me. Again, that's just how it looks, how other games have done it, I can't say for certain they won't make that content available to everyone eventually. Until they do though, I have to assume this is how it'll end up.

The next thing has to do with invasions. There's two big things that bother me. The timer on co-op partners is ridiculous. No matter how you look at it it's a stupid restriction. The other issue is being able to invade anywhere with no restriction. In the previous two games having those restrictions actually allowed players more freedom of choice because you could choose whether to participate in multiplayer while still having access to the perks of online play. Now, if you don't want to PvP, you have no choice but to play offline.

The final issue, I can't completely confirm, but I like how Levels were pretty meaningless in DkS, other than maybe opening up more gear and skill options. You still had plenty of other ways to power up that didn't involve leveling up, and that opened up a lot of game play options for playing at various level ranges. I haven't seen anything so far that indicates it will be that open.

According to a rough translation it seems like the DLC weapons are nothing more than base gear taken down one of the upgrade paths in the game (I kind of hope not because they look like s***) but that would mean that they will still be available to everyone. Preorders just get them early. Not certain but that would seem like the best option. Either way I'm still not a fan of it.

The timer for phantoms (an idea I actually like) is long as hell, if the beta is any indication. I didn't see anyone complain about the timer after the tests. I feel like it's a good incentive though for people to not solely rely on phantoms to carry them through the level.
Also phantoms no longer disappear after bosses (not 100%) and you can activate bonfires while they are present.

Not a fan of the invasions at all times either, actually. But I am at least willing to give it a shot. Although I do like to keep PvE and PvP separate, since PvP kind of kills the immersion for me at times.

There is already one character buff miracle (War, with no drawbacks), I imagine there will be a Red Tearstone equivalent, and I feel like elementals will still be powerful just not twink tools like they are now. As popular as low sl runs are I really doubt they are going to make that unviable.
