So I still own Phantom Crash for the original Xbox but don't have the system anymore. However I do have a X360 and XO. Do the controllers of either of the systems work on the Xbox? I'd hate to have to by a Xbox and controllers just to play this game again.

The Xbox 360 is back compatible with many original Xbox games including Phantom Crash(North American version) although there are occasional issues that varies depending upon the game. If you're version is from a different region, it might not work. Check the list below.

An official Xbox 360 hard disk is required to play any of the games on this list. The original Xbox controller is not compatible with Xbox 360 due to a different connector and marginally different button layout. Specifically, there are no white and black buttons on the 360 controller; they were replaced by the "bumpers" found above the left and right triggers. When playing an Xbox game on Xbox 360 (using an Xbox 360 controller), the white button is mapped to the left bumper and the black button to the right.

So far Xbox One only is back compatible with one OG Xbox game and that is Crimson Skies although Microsoft said there will be more in the future.

^That answer is entirely irrelevant to the question asked.

No, 360 and One controllers are not compatible with the original Xbox. You'll have to track down an OG controller.

As already mentioned, Phantom Crash is playable on the 360 (MS OEM HDD req'd). A few of the XBX to 360 controller button mappings feel odd, but they do work.

Just wanted to add that Microsoft added Xbox One compatibility to several OG Xbox games a few days ago. Here is the list:
BloodRayne 2
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
Dead to Rights
Fuzion Frenzy
Grabbed by the Ghoulies
The King of Fighters Neowave
Ninja Gaiden Black
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Red Faction II
Sid Meier's Pirates
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Bear in mind, while you will see visual improvements (particularly on Xbox One X, where games will run at 4K), most games use 4:3 aspect rations. Additionally, online multiplayer is unavailable because Xbox Live support for original Xbox games has been shut down. However, you can still play local multiplayer--including games that offer system link, which can connect Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One consoles together.

Microsoft said the next set of original Xbox titles will arrive in Spring 2018.
