Despite "Mabinogi" being derived from "The Mabinogion", which is a collection of 11 medieval Welsh tales written in prose. I guess the devs just thought Mabinogi sounded like a cool name.
"Remember kid, there's heroes and there's legends. Heroes get remembered, but legends never die. Follow your heart kid, and you'll never go wrong."

It's tangentially related.
Probably the biggest slip up was naming the character Morrighan after the trio instead of Badb.
Especially because later on when they introduce Macha and Neamhain as having actual plot relevance, they refer to the trio as "Badb Cath", probably realizing how they screwed up and deciding to just toss the other name in as a joke as well for the people who bothered looking into these things.

They even have mention of Nuadha Airgetlamh losing his arm in the battle of Mag Tuireadh, Cichol as leader of the Fomorians, a LOT of references to the Tuatha de Danann, etc.
