A lot of people misunderstand what the original Red and Green is, and so misunderstand what their own Red and Blue are:

-The original Red is much like the original Green. Green is not a separate special version that only Japan got: they both were. They both use different (earlier) graphics and code from our Red and Blue.
-The original Blue is actually more like Yellow, Crystal, and so on. It added much of the graphics and code that we're more familiar with, and probably has its own set of Pokemon (haven't looked into lists). Like the original Red and Green, it too is a separate special version that only Japan really got.
-Our Red and Blue are actually simply the original Blue with the Pokemon lists of the original Red and Green. "Blue", here, is really a misnomer, and a dumb choice on the part of the localizers (as good as Blastoise is).

It's a dumb choice because over the years the original Green has achieved a legendary status that it does not deserve. It is a status at the expense of the original Red and Blue, which are perceived as simply versions of the games we got and are ignored. When you go out of your way to make a translation hack based on a lie, you have a problem. When people are 90% correct but still operate under the assumption that "Green was never released outside of Japan" (two things that completely conflict with each other), it's like you didn't even learn anything.

Who cares? All these people who obsess over Green so much, I'd imagine.

The problem is - Green was essentially released outside Japan - albeit as Blue.

As you have observed, the original red & green were early Japan-only releases, whereas the western releases were based on Blue's code and updates. Yellow was then released to capitalize in on the popularity of the anime.
