I had a roommate who swore it was a puzzle game. He said just cus it's not on a board like tetris or intelligent qube doesn't mean it's not a puzzle game. He argues the object of the game is to navigate the enviorment to get to the enemies then solve the puzzle on how to defeat them. He says the action/adventure elements are primarily cosmetic.
Action/adventure obviously. And to be fair, I could make the same type of 'puzzle solving' argument that your friend has for, say, something like the license challenges in the Gran Turismo series of games.
