#9- (The tortoise)
Designation: Storm Echo
Proper name: Basaran
Latin name: Nimbus Recanto

Normal Method:

I will assume for the purposes of this guide that you rode up to the colossus on Agro. If you did not, see the time attack section. You will start the fight on Agro. You will see the colossus emerging from its cave and raising its head. It is going to shoot at you. Take off on Agro and turn around as quickly as you can. I do not recommend using the Agro 180 as a horizontally moving target will be harder for the colossus to hit. Ride away from the colossus and towards the nearest geyser. Position yourself so that the geyser is between you and the colossus. Ride in circles around this area to draw the colossus over the geyser while avoiding being hit by the shots it will frequently fire. Ride in circles until the colossus is over the geyser and the geyser begins to spray. The colossus will go up on either its left set or right set of legs; which side does not matter. If this does not happen, the colossus is not properly above the geyser; reposition it by getting it to follow you. Once you get the colossus on two legs, ride up under it; stop; and shoot the glowing bottoms of its grounded feet. The colossus, its traction gone, will tumble towards the shot feet. Ride around the colossus on whichever side you are closest to as it falls. Be careful not to be knocked from the saddle and crushed. The colossus will eventually come to rest on its side. As you round the colossus, you will see a stomach covered in fur. Leap onto the furry stomach of the colossus and start climbing. When you get to the hard, stone shell of the colossus, run up the horizontal plate like protrusion to the white line. Crouch over this white line. The colossus will soon begin to right itself, if you remain crouched as it turns you will hold onto the ledge that is the white line. When the colossus stops shaking so violently, drop to the new horizontal plate at the edge of the colossus’ shell. Run towards the tail of the colossus until you can turn around and head towards the tail between two sets of skyward protrusions of the colossus’ shell. The weak spot is on the head. Stab until death.

Hard Mode:

The only differences in hard mode are damage taken and given. There are no extra weak points.

Alternate Methods:

1) If you stand on the colossus’ tail, it will lift up its tail and lower its face. If you jump on Agro and haul ass to its face you can jump on.

2) You can jump onto the colossus’ front leg and be shaken to its face if you release at the right time.

3) When the colossus begins to turn over, you can, instead of holding onto the little ledge, run over the edge during the turn. If you time this correctly, you will land on the colossus’ back rather than having to run around.

4) You can jump on the Colossus' back leg and be launched to the edge of its shell near the back.

Time Attack:

At the start of the fight, quickly run and jump on Agro. Take off and make a moving target as fast as possible. Any of the above methods can be used with success in both normal and hard time attacks. Any of the alternate methods will be faster if pulled off cleanly.
"But to what end was this world formed?" said Candide.
"To infuriate us," replied Martin.

#10- (The sand worm)
Designation: Sand Tiger
Proper name: Dirge
Latin name: Harena Tigris

Normal Mode:

For the purposes of this guide I will assume you rode up to the starting area on Agro. At the beginning of the fight, quick start Agro into a run. You should run near enough to the colossus, which you can see churning under the sand, that it notices and follows you. Ride towards a wall, turning your camera towards the colossus (auto point with L1) and pulling out your bow and readying an arrow. Eventually the colossus’ orange eyes will be visible above the sand. Release the camera lock button and aim for one of the colossus’ eyes. Shoot the colossus in the eye to hear it scream and watch its eyes close. Keep riding forward; do not turn; you should be headed towards a wall. Keep going until you are close enough to the wall to jump off of Agro into the wall. Do so and wait for the colossus to crash headfirst into the wall: you will have enough room not to be crushed by the colossus. Jump on the colossus’ head and make your way up its back until you see a weak point. Start stabbing. The colossus will go back underground after finishing off a weak point. When this happens, ride close enough by it to get its attention and repeat the above from there.

Hard mode:

The only differences between hard and easy modes are damage differences. There are no new weak points on Dirge in hard mode.

Alternate Methods:

1) You can use one of the free standing rocks in the arena instead of a wall to crash the colossus into.

2) You can start from its tail end if you didn’t get between the colossus and the rocks or you didn’t jump from Agro and he kept going during the crashing cut-scene.

3) If you Stab one weak point until it is almost all of the way dead then stab the other to the same, you can finish it off in one stabbing session. The finishing blow should be a jump stab or a fully charged stab. This method requires you to be very precise and is quite difficult to do regularly.

4) Failing #3, you do not finish of the colossus but leave it with only one, very low health weak point. This still saves you a good bit of time.

Time Attack:

All of the above methods can be used with success in both normal and hard time attacks. The third alternate method will save you large amounts of time; the fourth alternate method will still save you quite a bit of time.
"But to what end was this world formed?" said Candide.
"To infuriate us," replied Martin.

#11- (The tiger)
Designation: Flame Guardian
Proper name: Celosia
Latin name: Ignis Excubitor

Normal Method:

As soon as the fight starts, roll to your right and into the space between the flaming altar and the wall. This is to avoid a forceful ramming by the Colossus. Climb up the altar via the ledges on the side. Crouch down behind or to the side of the flaming pit bowl until the colossus rams the altar. There is a cut-scene here where a flaming stick gets knocked off of the pedestal. Leap from the pedestal to the stick and pick it up with circle. If it is on fire, hold it up to the colossus with circle; if it is not on fire, get your ass back into that hiding hole before you get rammed so you can climb back up and relight it. Once you have a lit stick, get the colossus between you and the end of the arena open to the outside. The colossus will be afraid of the fire and back away from you. Keep it backing until it falls from the arena. Watch the cut-scene where the colossus falls to the ground outside, breaking its armor to reveal its weak point. Jump down first one level to the lower ledge, then another, aiming to land on the colossus. If you didn’t land on the colossus, it tends to be easier to jump on the colossus and harder to get rammed if you stay behind it. Once you are on the colossus, you should easily be able to find the weak point. If you’re having trouble stabbing the colossus, wait until it stops running and attempts to shake you off: this makes it pretty simple to get in a jump stab.

Hard Mode:

The only differences between hard and normal modes are damage taken and given. There are no extra weak points.

Alternate Methods:

1) When the colossus goes to ram the pedestal, jump to the area where the stick lands.

2) Instead of chasing the colossus with the fire the whole length of the arena, run to the end of the arena then run around the colossus which will have followed you most of the way.

Time Attack:

Any of the above methods can be used with success in both hard and normal time attacks. Either one of the alternate methods will speed things up a good bit, or they combine well to reduce your time massively.
"But to what end was this world formed?" said Candide.
"To infuriate us," replied Martin.

#12- (The sea monster)
Designation: Great Sea Monster
Proper name: Pelagia
Latin name: Permagnus Pistrix

Normal Method:

For the purposes of this guide I will assume you start the fight on the broken pedestal in the water you come to first. If not, just swim over to it, diving when the colossus is about to shoot. Once on the broken pedestal, crouch down behind the stone circle in the middle to avoid being blasted. Whistle at the colossus, occasionally standing to shoot it with an arrow. The colossus will come over to you; keep up the whistling and the shooting. Eventually you will see the colossus start to draw back into the water. When this happens, jump up on the center stone circle. The colossus will come up out of the water and place its front legs on the pedestal. From this center circle, you should be able to jump onto the jutting ledge of the colossus’ face. From here, climb up onto the colossus’ head via the other ledges on its face. Once you get to its head, wait for the colossus to sit still. When you can stand, run over and whack one of the tooth-like protrusions with your sword. This will cause the colossus to go in the direction of the tooth you whacked. Using these colossus controls, guide the colossus over to one of the non-destroyed pedestals. When the colossus is near enough to the pedestal, jump from its head onto the roof of the structure. Run behind the large stone circle in the center of the roof and start whistling and occasionally poking out to shoot the colossus in the face. The colossus will come over to you and draw back into the water again. This time when the colossus pulls back, make your way towards the edge of the roof of the pedestal. Once the colossus’ front feet come to stop, leap onto its stomach. The weak point should be here. Find it and stab it. Eventually the colossus will go back into the water. You can either repeat the steps above or go to the alternate methods section for other ways onto the colossus. The colossus will destroy the roof of the pedestal you jumped off of most recently after you have dealt enough damage. You will always have enough pedestals, however, as the destruction is based upon the health of the colossus.

Hard Mode:

The only differences between normal and hard modes for Pelagia are damage differences. There are no new weak points.

Alternate Methods:

1) You can swim under one of the colossus’ front limbs and make it around the colossus to climb up its back from where you can walk to its head.

2) If you go to one of the unbroken pedestals you can hide behind one of the pillars on the corner. From here you can draw the colossus close enough, though whistling and arrows, to jump off of the platform sticking out from the pillar onto the colossus’ face.

Time Attack:

All of the above methods can be used with success in both hard and normal time attack modes. Jumping on Pelagia’s face from the start and swimming onto Pelagia’s back are probably the quickest two methods of getting on the colossus.
"But to what end was this world formed?" said Candide.
"To infuriate us," replied Martin.

#13- (The flying serpent)
Designation: Air Sailer
Proper name: Phalanx
Latin name: Aeris Velivolus

Normal Method:

You will start the fight in the middle of a stone circle in the middle of the desert. Switch to the bow immediately if you don’t already have it out. Aim at the colossus and shoot out as many of the white air-sacks as you can before it flies off from over you. Once it takes off, give chase on Agro. If you didn’t shoot out all the air-sacks to begin with, you will have to shoot them on the run. Try to aim a bit ahead of the air-sack and make sure to get the arrow pulled all the way back if you have to shoot any air-sacks while riding. Once all three air-sacks are deflated, follow along with the colossus as its front sets of wings drop to the ground. The tips will sink into the sand. Ride up to the colossus’ wings, coming towards them at an angle, and jump to them, grabbing onto one of the ridges. From there, climb until you get to the top of the wing. Wait a bit at the top of the wing and the colossus will raise its wing to a horizontal position, you should now be able to jump from the wing to the colossus proper. Head towards the tail of the colossus, you should notice a fin: the first weak point is under this. After you finish with the first weak point, the second will be under the next fin. You should be able to finish this one as well; if not, don’t worry. The colossus’ fins will start to close; this will push you out from under them if under them you be. The colossus will dive into the sand, tossing you from its back. Once you get back up, get onto Agro and hold L1 to have the camera look for the colossus under the sand. Ride towards wherever the camera points. You will hear a rumble from beneath you; the colossus is about to surface. Get out your bow and aim at the colossus. Attempt to shoot out all the re-inflated air-sacks as the colossus rises once again into the air. If you don’t get them all, chase the colossus down and get them. Climb up onto the colossus as before. Head to the last weak point under the last fin and finish it off.

Hard Mode:

The only differences between hard and normal mode are damage differences. There are no extra weak points.

Alternate Methods:

1) You can jump from the wing to the colossus while the wing is still vertical. You risk falling off of the colossus altogether like this, however.

2) I don’t know why you’d want to, but you could shoot out all the air-sacks mid ride. This is harder and slower, though.

3) You can leap towards the tail of the colossus. The mixture of colossus and air motion will move you quite a distance.

4) If you climb up onto the first fin and jump towards the second, you can get extremely far. This only works for the first fin, however, as the second is straight up and the third will send you tumbling from the colossus.

5) You can lower all the weak points to near, but not quite complete, death your first time on the colossus. This isn’t nearly as helpful as it is on Dirge, however.

Time Attack:

All of the above methods can be used with success in both normal and time attack. The jumping onto the colossus sooner, jumping down the colossus, and shooting the air-sacks from standing still make for the best combination.
"But to what end was this world formed?" said Candide.
"To infuriate us," replied Martin.

#14- (The lion)
Designation: Destruction Luster
Proper name: Cenobia
Latin name: Cladeds Candor

Normal Method:

When the fight starts, immediately jump up onto the fallen pillar that should be near you. Run to the end of the pillar nearest to the narrow platform. Jump up to the platform, grab the edge, and pull yourself up onto it. You will always be safe if you are on something or in one of the gutters. Run along the narrow platform until you reach the end, and then jump onto the broken wall. Make your way to the end of the broken wall and jump down to the next narrow platform to your left. Run to the end of this platform and jump off onto your first erect pillar, grabbing one of the indentions. Now I will introduce the main mechanic for this entire fight; pay attention: I’m not retyping this every time. Climb up to the top of the pillar; the colossus will ram it either once you are on the top or as you climb. If you are on the top, crouch to avoid falling. Once the pillar has been rammed once, pull your bow and shoot the colossus. The colossus will ram the post again. This is where things get a bit tricky. The pillar will start to fall over with you on it. It will go into a cut-scene that you can control Wander throughout. Crouch down. Wait until a second or so after the pillar shifts and thuds, then stand up and jump towards the next raise, narrow platform, holding R1 in case you don’t hit perfectly. If you time it right, you should land either standing or grabbing on the narrow platform. From there, run to the end of the narrow platform and jump onto the next. Jump from this platform to the next broken wall. Jump from this broken wall to the next narrow platform to your left. Jump from this narrow platform to the next pillar. This pillar is the same deal without the cut-scene and with another pillar to aim for. Jump a second or so after the thud. If you don’t manage to grab the next pillar, scramble up and back onto the pillar you just got knocked down. Once you’re on the next erect pillar, repeat the process to get to the third erect pillar. Repeat to the next narrow platform. Run to the end of the narrow platform and jump onto the next pillar. Repeat the pillar fun onto the next narrow platform. From this narrow platform, jump onto the large, stone structure with ridges on its side. Climb up to the top ridge and shimmy around the corner to where you can climb up higher. Climb to the top ridge and shimmy towards the end of the structure nearest the last pillar. Climb up onto the platform at the end of the structure and jump to the final pillar. Get the colossus to ram it twice and jump towards the wall the pillar is falling towards at around the same time you would normally jump; this is during a cut-scene. You can keep running during the cut-scene; head as directly away from the wall as you can. Once you can see properly, find a strip of ridges and use them to climb up to the higher level where you entered from. Go climb up onto the little, square pillar sticking out from the level floor of this second level. Shoot the colossus. Watch as it comes around and prepares to ram the little pillar you are on. As it charges, jump away from the colossus. Watch the cut-scene where the colossus’ armor is knocked off. Once you are back in control, you will find yourself surrounded by rubble. Make your way, keeping atop something at all times, towards the pillar you had knocked down last. Jump up onto it and either wait for the colossus or shoot at its back. Once it gets over to you, it will ram the pillar and be momentarily stunned. Jump onto the colossus and give it a stab or two. Once it starts getting up, jump back to the pillar. Repeat this until the colossus dies.

"To infuriate us," replied Martin.

Hard Mode:

The only differences between normal and hard mode are damage differences. There are no extra weak points.

Alternate Methods:

1) You could ride the colossus around to stab it. You probably don’t want to though as it is slower and harder than the above described method.

2) If you can’t get the jump timing just right, the next best option would probably be to jump slightly backwards to land on the pillar.

Time Attack:

It is highly recommended you do the pillar stun method for time attack. Practicing until you can get the jumps regularly would be good as well.

#15- (The warrior)
Designation: Vigilant Sentinel
Proper name: Argus
Latin name: Praesidium Vigilo

Normal Method:

The fight starts with the colossus climbing up right n your face. Turn around and haul ass away from it. When you hear the colossus roar wait a few seconds and then leap to the air to avoid falling when it stomps. Run to your right as you face away from the colossus towards the low platform. Jump up onto the platform and keep going until you get to the last panel and the ledge is low above you. Turn and shoot arrows at the colossus to tick it off and make sure you have its attention. When the colossus gets over to you, turn the camera towards the low ledge; get against the wall, and crouch down. The colossus will step on the panel, lowering the side it steps on and raising you up high enough to climb onto the ledge. From here go right and up the stairs. Get in between two of the arch pillars and shoot at the colossus. When it gets over to you and starts shaking its arm, shoot it in the knife holding shoulder. Eventually it will swing its knife at you: you’ll probably want to either jump or crouch to avoid excessive damage. It should knock down blocks from above you. In my experience, the corner I have directed you to generally has good blocks. If there aren’t two blocks stacked one atop the other, what you need to climb up further, go to another corner and try again. Once you get good blocks, climb up to the next level where you should be walking on blocks similar to those you just got knocked down. Head towards the stair case that will take you higher; this should be towards the center of the arena regardless of the block room chosen. Go up the stairs. Look in both directions: you should see two bridges. Go to one of them, it doesn’t matter which, and get the colossus over there through either arrows or whistling. Go out a bit on the bridge as the colossus approaches. Keep shooting the colossus until it brings back its arm to swing. Run as fast as you can to the side out of the way. Watch the cut-scene. When you get back control, get the colossus as close under the little stub of left over bridge as possible and jump onto the colossus'. The first weak point should be there. Stab. Next head to the colossus' right arm. Climb down until you see the glowing spot on the back of its upper arm. Stab this to cause the colossus to drop its knife. Now drop to the ground from the colossus’ arm and get your bow out. Run from the colossus until you get a good distance away. Turn and shoot the colossus repeatedly in its right shoulder. As it draws near it will do one of two things. If it starts to stomp, run away while jumping to keep from being hurt. If it starts to swing its arm, run to your right and pull your sword. Its hand will slam into the ground. Jump onto its palm to see the weak point. You shouldn’t have more than one or two stabs worth of health left.

Hard Mode:

There is one extra weak point in hard mode. This weak point is on the right side of Argus’ chest. Make sure you have full stamina before going for this weak point, as it is very difficult. The only other differences are damage differences.

Alternate Methods:

1) It is possible to drop from the colossus’ unarmed arm into the weak point bearing hand.

Time Attack:

All of the above methods can be used with success in both normal and hard time attacks. Dropping into the colossus’ hand from its arm will save much time.

"To infuriate us," replied Martin.

#16- (The sorcerer)
Designation: Grand Superior
Proper name: Malus
Latin name: Grandis Supernus

Normal Method:

You start the battle at the bottom of a staircase, Malus standing tall before you. As soon as you get control, start up the staircase, sticking to the right. Run behind the fallen pillar on the right: this will shield you from Malus’ first blast. Head right into the first bunker hole. Follow the path until you come to an open area with a few blocks in the corner. Climb out via the box and immediately take shelter behind the stone wall you come out near. This will block Malus’ shot. Now run to the right behind the next barrier. Stop as the blast hits. Move onto the next barrier, then the last, stopping for the shots to land each time before continuing. Finally, run toward the second tunnel, rolling just to be safe if you hear a shot being fired. Follow the tunnel until it opens out again. Head left down the stairs and to the circular ledge. Grab onto and shimmy around the ledge after going as far as possible on the narrow walkway. Jump backwards from the ledge onto the next little walkway, keeping R1 held because of Wander’s tendency not to make this jump well. Head along the next little walkway until you can turn left. Turn and head straight for the opening with the pillars. Follow this tunnel until it opens out to an area with a pillar and rubble that serves as stairs almost. Make your way out and take shelter behind the nearest stone wall. Wait until a shot hits the stone wall. If a shot does not hit, dart out and back in as fast as possible. Once you get a shot to hit the stone wall you’re hiding behind, start running towards the second stone wall. As soon as you hear him start to fire, roll towards the wall. Pause and do this again to the next wall. There is a chance that he will fire more than one shot or shoot as soon as you come out of cover. More than one shot with regular start time is dealt with by the advised pause. If he shoots early and hits you, however, you’ll have to start again from the first wall in this section. Just go from the little trench he shoots you into back to the pile that lets you out. Once you get behind the third wall it should be no trouble getting to the hole that serves as the entrance to the final tunnel, just roll once more after you’re hidden. Follow along the tunnel, whistling like mad in honor of your valiant steed and only companion who gave his life that you might slay Malus and complete your quest.

Continued in next post.

Eventually you will come out under Malus’ skirt. Watch the short cut-scene and head for the wall in front of you covered in ledges. Climb it. Once you are on the outside, turn the camera so that it is facing the colossus. Run to the right and jump to the next platform. Grab onto the projection with the ledge on it and use this to climb to the next level. From here run left until you get to the next wall with ledges which you will climb up to reach the next platform. Head back right until you come to yet another wall with numerous ledges on it. Climb this wall as high as it goes, getting off on the platform to the left. Jump up onto the next projection that has ledges to take you up. Keep going directly up from there until you can go no higher. Jump the little gap to the right and go around the stone block on the platform. Stop in between the stone blocks and climb directly up until you see the glowing spot on Malus’ back. Stab the colossus in the back. Hold down and triangle during the cut-scene to prepare a backwards jump. As soon as the cut-scene ends, jump backwards onto Malus’ hand. Crawl around to the top of the hand as you are brought around up front. Stab the hand to get it to hold still. Run up the arm and jump to the glowing spot on its upper arm--the glowing blue weak spot, not the arm band. Stab the upper arm and charge a backwards jump. Jump to Malus’ other hand as it nears. Climb around to the other side of this hand. Stab the hand for it to sit still. Stand up, pull out your bow, and shoot Malus in its left shoulder: the one on your right. Malus will bring its hand up to its shoulder. Climb up the hand and jump to the shoulder. Climb up to the head to find the weak point. Stab.

Hard Mode:

The only differences between hard and normal modes are damage differences. There are no extra weak points.

Alternate Methods:

1) You can jump from the first hand onto the shoulder.

2) There are numerous paths you can take up the colossus.

3) You can go back to the colossus’ shoulder and stab it. This will cause the colossus to sit still long enough for you to get in a stab or two.

4) The grand-daddy of all colossus killing methods, the ultimate feat in Shadow of the Colossus, ladies and gentlemen, I present the dodge run. Without using any tunnels or stone walls, you run a specific path right up to the colossus, out in the open where the while world can see you. I’ve never managed this; I’ve hardly gotten past the very beginning. As such, I do not intend to attempt a butchered explanation. I’ll just give you a link to the best explanation I have ever seen: Sniper’s dodge tutorial video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgk72RgI2-0

Time Attack:

All of the above methods will work in both normal and hard time attacks. The shoulder stabbing method wont get you record breaking times, but should get you through time attack. The dodge run is clearly the best.
"But to what end was this world formed?" said Candide.
"To infuriate us," replied Martin.
