This replacement of the Colossus Help Topic is designed to organize the clutter and mess of the original into 16 easy to use posts. The organization should be pretty easy to figure out: general tips then each colossus in order. I’ll provide a table of content anyway for people who don’t read this and just look for the narrow column indicating easy to use info.

General Tips

IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE GAME, IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU READ THIS POST BEFORE GOING TO THE GUIDE!

The key to defeating nearly every colossus is the environment in which it has been placed. Look around you. Ask yourself questions about the environment about you and the colossus. How is the environment unique? How would I distinguish this environment from those of the other colossi? What details would I use to describe the environment in which I have found myself? Then, take these environmental particulars and question them. What could this be used for? Think of everything you could use things in the environment for. Experiment with the colossus to see if it has any behavior that could cause the environment to have an as of yet un-thought-of use. Always remember, if there is something obvious and different and stand out about the environment around the colossus, it is very likely to be used in defeating it.

Also, make sure you listen to Dormin. He gives you hints even when he’s just telling you about the colossus in the temple. You’ll often see, in retrospect (of course) that Dormin’s words in the temple were very telling about the colossus. And, though most people know this, Dormin will give hints from afar if you take two long while fighting a colossus. He has two hints to give for each colossus. Wait for those if you’re having trouble. If you take into account the tips the game gives you along with the environmental particulars about every colossus, figuring them out shouldn’t be too difficult.

And, of course, last and probably least (as Dormin tells you outright, I believe) shine the sword at the colossi to reveal their weak points.

#1- (The minotaur)
Designation: Minotaur Colossus
Proper name: Valus
Latin name: Minotaurus Colossus

Normal method:

To speed the process of catching the colossus, start the fight by whistling to get its attention. Run up behind the colossus and jump onto the back of its left leg. Climb until you reach the glowing blue spot on the calf, stab here twice. Watch the falling cut scene, keeping R1 held so you don’t fall. When the scene ends, jump and grab the fur above you. Climb from here up to the stone strip that will impede your progress, jump so that you hang from the strip rather than the fur. Slide sideways along the strip towards the stone platform sticking out of the colossus’ lower back, jump up onto the platform. From here jump up in between the two platforms above you. Climb up to the head, find the weak point, and begin stabbing.

Hard mode:

In hard mode, Valus has one extra weak point. It is on the back of Valus’ right arm: most easily accessed from the platform on the right side of the back.

Alternate methods:

1) You can go from the club to the arm to the back to the head.

2) You can launch from the back of the leg to above the stone impediment.

3) After stabbing the knee, you can run around and jump on the face.

4) During the cut scene where Valus falls to his knee, it is possible to continue moving and make progress towards defeating the colossus.

Time attack:

Any of the above listed methods can be used in both normal and hard time attack with success.

#2- (The bull)
Designation: Taurus Major
Proper name: Quadratus
Latin name: Taurus Magnus

Normal method:

When the fight starts, run in front of the colossus; whistling to get the colossus' attention may help. The colossus will stop and rear up on its hind legs: shoot the glowing bottoms of one of its feet. The colossus will fall to the ground and then to the knee of the leg you shot. Run over to the downed knee and you will see fur to climb. Climb up the leg to the platform at the top of the thigh, you may need to rest here for stamina. From this platform jump down the side of the colossus towards its rear end--be sure to grab the fur before you fall. From here, continue to climb towards the back of the colossus until you reach the back leg, climb upwards here. Once you reach level enough surface, stand and run to the rear end of the colossus until you reach the weak point at its very tail end. Take out this weak point. From here start moving towards the front of the colossus; if you climb up one of the rib like structures you can get to the spine which may be run/jumped across the entire way. Once you get to the head the weak point should be easy to find; stab the hell out of that symbol.

Hard mode:

In hard mode, Quadratus has one extra weak point; it is on its left side. For this reason it is simpler to shoot the bottom of the foot that is on your right when the colossus rears up.

Alternate methods:

1) You can shoot the bottom of a foot when the colossus picks it up to walk.

2) You can jump from Agro onto the fur on one of the back legs.

3) You can launch from the platform on the shoulder onto the back of the colossus.

4) You can jump from the downed leg of the colossus onto the face and climb form there onto the head.

Time attack:

Any of the above methods can be used with success in NTA. For HTA, you will almost certainly want to shoot the foot on your right, the colossus’ left, to speed things up.
"But to what end was this world formed?" said Candide.
"To infuriate us," replied Martin.

#3- (The knight)
Designation: Earth Knight
Proper name: Gaius
Latin name: Terrestris Veritas

Normal method:

When the fight starts, move close to the edge of the platform and stay there. Shoot him in the stomach with some arrows to piss him off. Now just stand there and wait for the colossus to get near you. It should lift up its arm for a downward stab attack, when you see this run between its legs. Keep running until you reach the hard stone disk in the center of the platform. The colossus will turn around and bring back its arm for a big swing. Run directly away from the colossus. The colossus will hit the hard stone disk, destroying its armor. Run to either side now, the colossus will come in for another long swing. This time its arm extension will be stuck in the dirt: use this time to run up onto it and from there onto the arm. Climb up the arm and onto the colossus’ back; get up and run when the surface is level enough. Run to the head; find the weak point; stab. Once that weak point is exhausted, run to the back of the colossus, you should be able to drop from the stone belt around the chest onto the platform at the waist. Run around to the front of the stomach, jump on the weak point, deliver the finishing stabs.

Hard mode:

In hard mode, Gaius has one extra weak point; it is on the back of the colossus’ left arm. It can be gotten to from the left side of the back.

Alternate methods:

1) Launch from the end of the sword to the head. Requires practice.

2) Launch from the middle of the sword to the bracelet on the arm.

3) Launch from the middle of the sword onto the stomach.

Time attack:

For both time attacks, all methods can be done. For both time attacks, sword launches of any sort will speed things up as you won’t have to break the armor.
"But to what end was this world formed?" said Candide.
"To infuriate us," replied Martin.

#4- (The horse)
Designation: Elite War Horse
Proper name: Phaedra
Latin name: Equus Bellator Apex

Normal method:

When the fight starts, ride away from the colossus towards the mounds in the center of the field. Stop and get off of Agro on top of the farthest hill from the colossus. Wait. Once the colossus gets near the bottom of the hill you are on, make sure it sees you and drop down off the edge and into the cave. From there, run through the tunnels, past one exit, go out the second exit you find. Run out of the cave and to the edge of the wall, being careful not to come out from behind it. Turn the camera so you can see the colossus without revealing yourself. Again, wait. Eventually, the colossus will bend down to look into the cave you entered, lowering its tail in the process. Run across the field and jump onto its tail. Climb up the tail and onto its back, run from the back to the neck. Stab the glowing place on the neck twice, the colossus will level its head so you can walk across and begin stabbing the weak point on its head.

Hard mode:

In hard mode, Phaedra has two extra weak points, one on each shoulder. They can be easily accessed from the back.

Alternate methods:

1) You can jump, from Agro, onto one of the back legs and make your way from there onto the tail and then the back.

2) If you wait at the start of the first cave you enter, the colossus will eventually lower its head allowing you to jump onto its dangling earrings. Climb from there onto its head.

Time attack:

In NTA, any of the above listed methods should be possible. In HTA, it is recommended that you use either the leg jump or the earrings to speed things up.

"To infuriate us," replied Martin.

#5- (The bird)
Designation: Bird of Prey
Proper name: Avion
Latin name: Avis Praeda

Normal method:

The fight will start with you on a fenced in platform, run and jump through the hole in the front left corner. You will fall into the water. Swim from here to a set of platforms from which you can see the colossus, any that allow you to see the colossus will do. Jump onto the middle platform. Fire fully charged arrows at the colossus to anger it. The colossus will swoop down to attack you; when it does this, jump onto the patch of fur on either of its shoulders. There will be moment during which you cannot move. After the moment passes climb onto the back of the colossus. Wait until the colossus stops flapping its wings and is flat to glide; run out to the end of the nearest wing and find the weak point on the end. Take out the weak point. Wait again for the colossus to be still, and make your way to the center of its back. From here, run down the tail of the colossus; at the end you will find a weak point; take it out. Run back up the tail now towards the colossus’ head. Once you reach the front, wait for the wings to be still and level. Run to the end of the wing opposite the on you got first; find the weak point; finish the colossus.

Hard mode:

Avion has no extra weak points in hard mode. They only require more stabs, which can make the wing weak points difficult to return from.

Alternate methods:

1) Drop from the first wing to the second when the colossus tips.

2) Drop from the wing to the tail.

Time attack:
There really aren’t many different methods for this colossus. The above strategy works for both normal and hard time attacks, but either alternate method will speed things up.
"But to what end was this world formed?" said Candide.
"To infuriate us," replied Martin.

#6- (The bearded giant)
Designation: Great Beast
Proper name: Barba
Latin name: Belua Maximus

Normal method:

The fight will start with the colossus right at your back. Run as fast as you can to the nearest wall. Find one of the lower platforms and use it to climb atop the wall. Jump as far forward as you can from the wall. As the colossus reaches the wall you just leapt from, you will see a scene of him smashing the wall. After the scene ends, continue over the walls and to the end of the chamber. Here you will find a small staircase leading up to a row of columns supporting a rather low ceiling: run into this niche. Wait here for the colossus, occasionally whistling to be sure it knows where you are. Once the colossus reaches the end of the chamber, whistle a few more times: the colossus should bend down to look for you. When the colossus bends down, run out and jump onto its beard. The colossus will stand up; make your way from its beard to its neck or shoulder. From here, run up the colossus’ head where you will find a weak point; stab it out. From the head move to the colossus’ back. Go for the side that is its left. From here, move down to the back of the colossus. On its left side, there should be a weak point that is easy to find. Take out this weak point to finish the colossus.

Hard mode:

In hard mode Barba has one extra weak point, on its left hand. This weak point can be accessed when it bends down to inspect the hole in which you are hiding. It will place its left hand flat on the ground.

Alternate methods:

1) You can jump on either hand when it inspects the hole; you can launch from the hands onto the colossus.

2) You can jump onto either hand from one of the walls: launch from the hand.

3) If you jump on the side of the beard on your right (the colossus’ left), when the colossus stands up the swinging of its beard will deposit you on its shoulder.

4) If you run the colossus’ right (your left) right at the start of the fight, the colossus will stomp in place. As it stomps, it lowers its hand enough for you to jump onto it. From here you can launch to either the face (for normal) or the other hand (for hard).

Time attack:

Any of the above methods can be used with success in both hard and normal time attacks. In hard it would be quite beneficial to jump launch from the hand with the weak point onto the colossus. In either mode, the fastest method is to jump on the hand from the start. Considering the difficulty of this method, however, it may be better to go with an easier method your first time.

"To infuriate us," replied Martin.

#7- (The electric eel)
Designation: Sea Dragon
Proper name: Hydrus
Latin name: Draco Marinus

Normal method:

The fight starts with you in the water and Hydus swimming around below the water. Swim to the colossus. Try to swim over the colossus’ head; eventually, the colossus will notice you and give a growl. The colossus will now swim up underneath you and pass under you in its entirety. Try to position yourself in the middle of its head so to keep your bearings. As the second electrical spine comes near you, swim off to the side a bit to avoid being shocked; quickly swim back after the third spine passes you. As the tail nears the surface dive into the water; this will allow you to grab on as early as possible. The colossus will drag you beneath the water for a while. When you are brought to the surface, run towards the hindmost spine. Your goal is to get to and stab the glowing spot behind the spine; if you cannot manage this before being submerged, stay behind the line that divides the colossus’ fur color. Stabbing the glowing points behind the spines will both do damage to the colossus and stop the shocking effect of the spines. Keep this up, running when pulled from the water and stabbing the glowing points, until you get to the last spine. One of two things will happen now: the colossus will either continue its pattern of emerging and submerging, or it will dive down and stay until you run out of stamina. If it is the former, proceed to the head and commence stabbing the single vital. For the latter, you’ll save yourself time if you just give in and let go; then repeat the mounting method above sans spine stabbing. Once you are on the head vital, you should be able to get in one fully charged stab between each submersion. Repeat until the colossus falls to your mighty blade.

Hard Mode:

The only changes you will see for Hydrus in hard mode are an increase in damage for you and a decrease in damage for the colossus. There are no new weak points.

Alternate Methods:

1) The colossus seems to dive and shake you off less if you are far forward on the glowing point behind the final spine as you stab it.

Time Attack:

As there are no significantly different alternate methods, the normal method is clearly the way to go. Just try to get as far forward on the last glowing point as you can so as not to get forced off.
"But to what end was this world formed?" said Candide.
"To infuriate us," replied Martin.

#8- (The lizard)
Designation: Wall Shadow
Proper name: Kuromori
Latin name: Parietinae Umbra

Normal Method:

The fight starts with you at the top of a six floor coliseum and the colossus at the bottom. Find the stairs and head down two floors. Whistle to get the attention of the colossus; it will climb up the walls after you. When you see the colossus through one of the windows, run down a few more stories of the coliseum: too the bottom if you want. You’ll want to move quickly so as not get blasted. If the colossus shoots near you, avoid the yellow mist as it causes damage if you stand in it for long. From wherever you decide to stop, shoot any two of the colossus’ legs. The colossus will come tumbling down to the bottom of the coliseum. If you are higher than the bottom, roll though one of the windows or jump from one of the larger gaps to the ground. The colossus will be on its back: jump onto its stomach. There are two weak points on the colossus, both on the stomach. Go to the nearest one and start stabbing. Eventually, the colossus will start to turn over. Jump of before it flips and crushes you. Head back up the stairs back to around the third or fourth floor. The colossus should already be after you; if not, get its attention either through whistling or arrows. Repeat the above; go down; shoot the legs; get on the colossus; stab. Keep this up until the colossus falls to your mighty blade; it shouldn’t take more than two or three cycles unless you really screw up a stabbing session.

Hard Mode:

Kuromori has no extra weak points in hard mode. You give less damage and take more.

Alternate Methods:

1) You can go up or down different numbers of floors. I just put the ones that I typically use; most others will work as well.

2) If you time and place your jump from a higher floor perfectly, you can hit the colossus’ leg on the way down, causing you to not stumble when you hit the ground. This is extremely hard and probably shouldn’t be relied upon.

3) If you shoot the colossus’ leg repeatedly, you can do enough damage for it to be much easier to take out both weak points in one stabbing session.

Time Attack:

All of the above methods can be used with success in both hard and normal time attack. Shooting the leg repeatedly for the single stab session is currently the fastest known method.
"But to what end was this world formed?" said Candide.
"To infuriate us," replied Martin.
