I've intimidated everyone I could come across, but I'm a mage with very little strength. I have yet to fail an intimidation though, however, in stats it does not say that magic aids, only strength. So, is this the case or is intimidation really easy?

Being a mage seems to let you intimidate certain people.

I'm pretty sure it does. I never put a point into strength and never failed an intimidation check with my mage. I was an AW though, so perhaps that changes things?

I think Intimidate usually requires strength, except for mages, where it requires magic. Same thing here: my mage never fails to make 'em crap their pants.

I doubt it, I'm not an AW, yet so far it has yet to fail. Except once, which might be the most minor spoiler ever, but I'll warn everyone anyway, on the bridge early on with the bandits. I selected "You really want a to mess with a mage" that failed, but selecting "I'm a gray warden" worked, when I reloaded the prior save to see what the other option would do.

Weird, the "you really want to mess with a mage option" worked for me. My coercion was level 2 at that point.

Mine was level 1, that's clearly the difference.

...
not a secret ... maybe ...
Warrior > Strength
Mage > Magic
Rouge > Cunning (persuasion)

and for the success rate it's better to increase Persuasion perk up to 3 ...
BTW, persuasion usually yield better reward in sub Quest ...
