She's true neutral, she doesn't approve of anything that doesn't directly improve your situation.

For example, you can opt to save the blacksmith's daughter from the castle, and Morrigan will disapprove.

She apparently lacks the foresight that this promise (whether you mean it or not ) /would/ improve your situation, making the town easier to defend.

It's because of 3 main reasons that are readily apparent by then.

1: She's selfish to a fault. Her way of thinking is that if the Warden wastes his time, charity, and energy on those who can't help themselves, then the warden is too soft-hearted to do what needs to be done or some such.

2: She is narcissistic. She loves herself to death, and thinks that people without the backbone to do things for themselves are worthless. Her way is the only way she can see people doing anything, and deviations from that are signs of weakness.

3: She's mean-spirited. She gets her kicks out of people either suffering or being in pain, and the Warden's kindness puts a damper on her good times.

These are only inferences based on the dialogue you get when you make certain choices (She berates you for offering to help the Blacksmith, Mayor, and Knights in redcliffe very clearly).

Foxxie, she isn't mean or anything like that, she just believes in survival above all else.

This is the true neutral thought pattern.

What you're describing is more chaotic neutral.

Eh, Foxxie_kun's post is ridiculously biased.

Morrigan is a survivalist and that makes her selfish, perhaps to a fault. She however, has her own prejudices and even approves of you doing "selfless" things like releasing Jowan and Sten. She just happens to not care about "commoners" or their problems.

It is true however that it's dumb of her to disapprove helping the town since a bit of examining would reveal it is in your goals best interests to help them out.

'Cause she's a *****.

Well, I admit I hate Morrigan. Backwoods tomboys don't interest me or my Main Characters. All of my men are more interested in bedding Zevran.

Insofar as all this bollocks about "True Neutral", "Chaotic Neutral" or whatever, leave that for your tabletop RPGs where it actually matters. She's a survivalist, yes, but she's also ridiculously short-sighted. Helping people, even commoners, can improve how people see you. How this can help is both unknown but almost universally beneficial in the long-term.

But I didn't notice her approving of freeing Sten. I even thought I saw her DISapprove when I convinced the Revered Mother to give me the keys (Though that could be because I didn't take a knife to her throat and threaten her life for the keys).

"it is in your goals best interests to help them out."

Protecting Redcliffe doesn't have anything to do with your goal (gathering allies, fighting darkspawn, killing archdemon), you could easily bail out and storm the castle instead without risking your neck protecting a bunch of farmers from zombies. From a survivalist point of view, that would be the best choice.
That games reward goodie two-shoes characters that mow their neighboor's lawn and help old ladies find their missing cats is a whole other matter.

One thing tho, the highest your approval with her, the less she disapproves, or at least you're given the option of persuade her most of the time (as well as sten).

Sten is an idiot. "Arghh how will this urn of sacred ashes help us at all in our quest to defeat the darkspawn *attacks*"... no **** Sten, if Eamon is dead, he's not going to support us against Loghain, nor give us Redcliffe's army.

There should have been a dialogue option [beat some sense into Sten].
