Is it a brand new PSP or did you buy it used?

Brand new.
I bought one to my son and one to me.
They both give that same error.

You might have to use media go for a psp that doesn't have wi-fi.
Or rather then trying to register you could just try to copy a downloaded game from your ps3 to your psp without registering. Just downloading from the ps3 to psp should activate the psp to your ps3's account, as long as you had no other psp activated on your account before this. If that fails you'll problbily need to use your pc and media go to do downloads and to activate/deactivate that type of psp. Registering a psp, on a ps3, seems to be for remote play which is something your psp can't do.
There might also be the issue of did you update the firmware of the psp?

Buy a game that works for psp on your ps3, download it to the ps3, use the triangle button on the bubble that shows up in the main part of the game menu on the ps3, have your psp plugged into your psp and ps3. then pick copy.

Thanks a lot - it worked :)

Just one more question:
Is it possible to play PS1 and PS2 games on PSP and can they be copied the same way ?
