was there ever a point in time when consoles were ahead of what could be done on PC, or have consoles always been obsolete on release?

Hardware supported side scrolling maybe. Though NES was still technically inferior in all other areas by a large margin.

Otherwise no Console have never been ahead of PC. The closest the gap ever was was Xbox 360 and PS3 on launch.

Didn't NES have better audio for a short time? PC sound cards would've been very rare in 1983.

The nes came out in 1985. By that time you had the commodore 64 with sid chip and the tandy 1000 with the tandy sound chip.

Again it's a moot point, most pcs didn't have support for smooth scrolling sprites.

EGA certainly made pc gaming better, but if you try the ega ports of console games they are generally worse then the console ports. PC gaming only took off with vga graphics (And the fact that cpus were generally far more powerful than console cpus).

Funny enough, ultimately NES ended up having less capable sound than Famicom. It didn't get upgrades like the FDS.
