What's the most terrifying thing to ever happen to you in regards to your PC? Like maybe an upgrade gone wrong, your pc fell off the desk or you let the kids get a little too close and they did something horrible to it or your expensive ass GPU you just got crapped out on you after a week. Share your pain with me.

A few months ago i ended up getting an RTX card to upgrade from my 1070. Now, I bought a pre-built just to get my foot in the door because I wasnt confident enough to build my own from the ground up yet. So after watching about a dozen videos about upgrading gpus, I pop the case open and tried to swap them out. Friggin card doesnt fit, the case is too small. Im thinking "How can this be? I did all my measurments. Am I a mongoloid and measured incorrectly?" So im doing everything i can to get this card in. The cracking sound of metal and plastic stopping my heart each time.

Long story short, there arw very large pieces of metal that used to be inside my PC that are now outside of my PC, but damnit I got the card in there. The Verge has got nothing on me.

a couple years ago in my dorm room i knocked half of a bottle of water onto my pc and it (obviously) wouldn’t boot and gave a POST pattern that i somehow interpreted as my cpu being fried. i thought it was done for and, being a poor college kid that needed my video games to unwind, i was devastated.

i brought it into a repair shop and apparently the only thing that ended up being fried was a single 2GB stick of RAM. not even the DIMM socket it was in. i used it as an excuse to get 8GB RAM (this was like 2014 so it was acceptable) and it worked fine. so f***ing lucky.

I had a CRT monitor thrown at me by my sister as a kid. Went through the wall as you would expect. Had a good time explaining that to my parents.

I had an AIO cooler go out without me knowing on an FX 8320 back in 2014. The chip was severely scorched but it worked. Ending up dropping it a few months later and threw it away cause y'know, bent pins. I had a Logysis 480w PSU melt once as well. The cables to it started melting (I have no idea how) and there was smoke. I don't think there was a fire, but the alarms went off in the home. It was a good time for me cause it wasn't my house.

People in my family are just naturally strong. She was a cheerleader...still saying that's not a sport 20 something years later. I picked my sister up earlier that night with the chair she was sitting in and threw it (this was before she threw the monitor, I wanted to use the computer, she had been on it all night and I needed to do homework. Yeah I definitely overreacted but I didn't wanna fail any papers). She's a nice person, married, has kids, but you don't piss her off or at the very least run if you do. I like to piss her off, but you know, that's what siblings are for.

I've posted about it before, but suffice to say accidentally running 110v though a system with an AT psu and letting ALL the smoke out.
It's not the fall that kills you, it's the rapid deceleration.....

I had a similar story but kind of in reverse. I was trying to run a password crack on telnet to open admin privileges on a site that will remain unnamed, but it was a popular search engine back in early 2000's. They disabled the KB+M and printed an officialish cease and desist letter from the printer. I was at my friend's house at the time and just walked out.

I think that my only horror story slash nightmare scenario, at least in the last 15 years, was when I was trying to get the heat sink off of my old Phenom II x3 720 and ended up pulling the CPU out of the socket entirely while it was still attached to the heat sink.

Thankfully the CPU still worked and continued working for several more years.
