Edit: I probably shouldn't have used "data mining," and should have used "collecting". Can't edit thread title, sorry.

There was a reddit post about it first I think, then from there people dug deeper:
https://metacouncil.com/threads/epic-game-store-spyware-tracking-and-you.766/

The reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/b15k8g/epic_games_launcher_appears_to_collect_your_steam/

I'm not sure what to think yet, except I'm glad I haven't gotten around to/bothered to install Epic.

Curious what others think?

I don't think this is legal. They are not using the steam API(like Origin for example) and they are not asking for consent to search your local files.

Since I've never installed Epic, I don't know what their EULA says. Maybe (sort of) permission given is in there somewhere, couched in obscure and obfuscated terms?

...at any rate, it certainly feels sneaky/fishy if not illegal in some way, yeah.

More epic skeeze.
It's too bad, UE is some great tech, and the Unreal series has some great games, but it seems Epic is just a big pile of skeeze and sleeze lately.

EULAs honestly almost never hold up in court. You agreeing to something that's inherently illegal does not, in turn, make it legal.

Are the resident epic shrills going to somehow spin this into their anti steam rhetoric?

But it collects the data regardless, and also collects a lot more than is required.
