The whole idea around dual graphics / sli / crossfire etc didn't take off because of false advertising. At first it was said that each card would render half the screen for a huge boost. When in reality one graphics card did the majority of the work while the second was dormant most of the time.

SLI only supports alternating frame rendering. Each card renders a frame in sequence.

Crossfire supported screen splitting modes in addition to AFR. AFR took off because it was easier to implement at the time. Screen splitting had load balancing issues.

The point of SLI and Crossfire was to sell more GPUs, by selling to people who already have one. This was about the same time ATI and Nvidia were exploring other areas to market their GPUs. It is a valid business strategy and decision.

While the concept is neat, I don't think it's really necessary anymore, cpus / gpus got really powerful the last years, and games still use ps360 assets for the most part... physics? Whats that?

^and even if they don't, modern cpu/gpu has no issues with higher fidelity either at affordable prices (under 1000)
