For example when I hook up my PS3/PS4 or any of my consoles to my TV they all look good even though the console resolution does not match the native resolution of the TV.

My my question is would work also the other way around too ? If I hook up the consoles to a standard monitor would it look good too ? Or would most likely look like crap cause most monitors don't include a internal a scaler ?

Almost all monitors include an internal scaler, and if the monitor supports HDMI, then it must have an internal scaler. The quality varies from monitor to monitor, but things are generally better now than they were years ago. If you want to test this without a console, you can try running a PC game at a resolution lower than your native one, like 1280x720 to simulate what PS3-era consoles are doing.

Make sure that your GPU scaling is not enabled, or else your GPU will be doing the work instead of the monitor, and your results won't be accurate.

Yeah, I think the era where consoles looked worse on monitors was back in the CRT days where everyone was used to how blurry it was on a standard TV and then you switched to monitor and saw jaggies.

Modern TVs have a lot of features that can help, so the only way it should look worse is if you are used to the extras your TV adds.

It also doesn't matter if the monitor has an internal scaler or not because the consoles all have one

The Switch looks good on my HP 25vx monitor. On the other hand, the Wii U looks like crap due to the console's lack of a full RGB mode and the monitor not having a limited mode.

Some monitors really don't like receiving non-native resolutions. My screen tends to squish any resolution that isn't 1920x1080.
