The only COD game I bought and played was Call of Duty 2. Good game but it was incredibly s*** optimized.

I played the hell out of the original CoD from 2003, such a great game for its time.
CoD4:MW is probably seen as the height of the series and it's just been a long, steady downhill trend from there.

Taken individually pretty much any of the CoD games are great at what they do. Problem is they're massively oversaturated.

Didn't shooters originate in ww2

Hardly.

Some of the biggest early FPS games, or otherwise influential FPS games were not set in WW2:

Doom
System Shock
Half Life
Goldeneye

Techincally, Spasim was the first FPS game, it had a "space" setting.

It wasn't really.

It was Activisions budget title MoH competitor that couldn't compete on PC with Half-life, UT, Quake, Battlefield etc so they offloaded it to console where it got super popular due to the Golden Eye/Halo effect..
