And if you bought a good gaming laptop, is there a way to play it on your tv like you could with a desktop? idk, not really a huge pc gamer

If you don't know the answer to that you really shouldn't be buying anything -- desktop or laptop -- anytime soon.

Yes, of course you can. As long as your laptop has an HDMI-out port (or DisplayPort-out, or if you're behind the times then VGA-out or DVI-out).

I have a gaming laptop though its pretty old now. probably 6 years old or so. I never use it but my nephew does when he comes over. which is the only reason i hold onto it.

I had a very decent desktop with a 1080 that I built, thing was so damned cumbersome and with all the moving I've been doing, I sold it and got the acer helios 300 laptop for $1000.
Laptop is an i7hq/256mme/16gb's/1060 6gb/1tb ssd. It's hooked up to my monitor via hdmi and I kept my old mechanical k/b and mouse and I'm hard pressed to notice any differences between it or my old desktop. It plays the same steam library, takes everything I've thrown at it, absolutely no complaints.
The plus being I can take it on the fly now, no worries.
Of course you're never gonna beat a desktop for expansions and upgrades, but with the insane price in GPU's and memory today, a decent laptop will actually carry you pretty far.

Ordinarily, gaming laptops are heavily overpriced and become outdated in a few months.

Now they are still overpriced and become outdated within a year.

Buy a prebuilt PC if you want to get into PC gaming, as the market right now is heavily inflated.

That's an old stereotype. My current 3.5yo laptop still runs most everything V.High because most everything is a console port. My last gaming laptop lasted ~4.5yrs and only had issues with some games in the last year due to the next-gen console releases bringing a bump in PC requirements. PC requirements always jump with new consoles.

Any GTX 1060 6gb/RX 580 laptop are both well north of what the PS4 GPU is equal to in it's optimization. With another 4-5yrs before a true next gen consoles arrive, the $1000-1200 that such laptops can be had for is a pretty good deal. You'll just have to tweak settings individually more in the latter years, but it will still look decent.
Give everyone enough guns and eventually we'll find out who we have to shoot to get some decent gun control.
