It's so called counter-strike setup.
Most of us that started playing CS over a decade ago had to adjust to cramped space in lan centers, so everyone tilted their keyboard.
CRT monitors didn't help with space management, either.

Some more extreme cases from pro players these days:

As for me, it's because I find it very uncomfortable if my left arm isn't fully stretched out, that's why I tilt the keyboard.
Also, I'm 6'3 and my fingers are long, with thumb being weirdly long and thin, so it's not awnkward to use it for controls at all. I can even type very well with just my left hand, with thumb included.

I don't have these problems because I use an input device that was designed for gaming

I stopped using mouse and keyboard a long time ago (I don't know how people still put up with it, tbh), but when I did, definitely middle finger on the W. Frees up the pinky for modifier buttons, as mentioned already in this thread.

But seriously, get an xbox controller. It's a device that was actually made for gaming.

Yeah maybe if don't play ANY competitive games and only play FPS and TPS type games... Good luck using a controller for RTS or anything like that.

I only use controller for Single Player.

The mouse isn't necessarily mutually exclusive with the controller, either. There are games where I will use the controller in the left hand and the mouse in the right. It's the keyboard that's not meant for gaming.

This! The keyboard was not designed to game.

I do wonder why no keyboard replacement for gaming has ever reached popularity. An analog stick for movement that you control with your thumb, plus a button each for your four remaining fingers that presses if you increase pressure with that finger. I guess it doesn't really help you all that much in the typical game, but driving in some games would be so much better if you had a finer control over your speed.

For WASD movement I use a mirror of what I would use with my right hand with the arrow keys. It would seem that is the middle finger.

On this topic the Descent series is hilarious with its movement and rotating in any direction.

Actually the keyboard is the most appropriate for gaming. Tons of keys at your disposal. Having games catered to controllers requires significant dumbing down. Imagine something like Stalker on a controller, how would that work?

There are keys for:

Inventory key
PDA key
crouch key
smaller crouch key
walk key
sprint key
2 keys for grenade types
AR grenade launcher key
aim down sights key
key for drinking energy drink
key for medkits
key for bandages
change ammo type key

Not to mention the other stuff such as bolt key, binoculars key, anomaly detector key. You can't play that on a controller without a considerable compromise. Whole genres of games don't work for controllers. Saying it is "designed for gaming" means nothing if it's still inferior to KB anyway.

Those are not what we're talking about, lol. You don't move around with WASD in a point and click adventure. You point and click. I'll still play an old school point and click. In fact, I just recently ran through Indian Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. But, the keyboard was still 5 feet away from me the whole time (unless I had to save)

You said that you gave up on KB+M a long time ago (and dunno how people still people put up with it), and that a controller is actually meant for gaming. I refuted that by saying point and click adventures, simulations and strategy games need KB+M (or just M). Controllers don't help with those genres. That's what you are talking about. Gamepads is better for many genres, but not all.

Here are Rainbow Six Siege pros playing competitively, an environment where aim assist is completely turned off.

And yet the scrublords here say playing FPSes on controllers is perfectly fine and we're supposed to take them at their word lmao. Controllers need aim assist. Like riding a bycicle with training wheels.

I use EDSF if possible because my hand naturally goes to the home row position, and I can't do WASD comfortably from that position.

If rebinding isn't an option, then I move my hand over so my index finger is on D and my ring finger is on A.
