Hey everyone,

I’m looking for something with really good audio quality. From what I’ve read, that means getting headphones and not a “gaming” headset.

I’m trying to look for really good sound quality, and also comfort.

Not worried about a mic too much, I can always buy a usb mic like a yeti.

I have about $100-$120 to spend.

What would you guys recommend?

Little bit over. But they're nice.

Audio-Technica's (above) get fantastic reviews, I've never actually tried them myself but with so many recommendations I'm inclined to trust the reviews.

Within your budget you can likely pick up some Sennheisers, not the best brand but they're above average in quality and easy to find.

They are great.

Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 80 Ohm

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016MNAAI/

I think it's superior to the M50's in terms of sound, but obviously, that's subjective. I own both (among other headphones). Really damn competitive at this price point, saving up a little more for this would really be worth it, imo.

It also has velour earpads versus the fake leather earpads the M50's have, and it really makes a difference in terms of comfort, especially in warmer temps or even during long gaming sessions where your skin next to the fake leather starts sweating and starts getting uncomfortable.

Just a note, both the M50's and the DT 770's are closed-ear headphones, and open-ear headphones (like the Sennheiser 558's listed above) will give you a more "realistic" sound and larger soundstage the vast majority of the time.

What’s about the Sennheiser 598?

I own the old ivory color 598 and they are excellent. I definitely recommend them over the M50x for gaming because of the superior soundstage which is important in games. 598 are open back though so not something you want to use in public (leaks sound). The cheaper 558 can also be modded very easily (5 mins) to make them sound a bit more like the 598 (some people prefer the sound of modded 558). Not sure about the newer model 579 though.

edit: after a quick google search, the 579 can also do the foam mod.

Audio Technica is easily my favorite headphone brand. Check out the AD500x, AD700x, or AD900x if you're into open backs with phenomenal comfort.
