Unless your previous card literally didn't work for your purpose, you kind of got screwed. A used card in a normal market should be about half that price. Hell, the person you bought it from may have spent less on it when they bought it new, and just made money off the deal.

Ya I know I just checked eBay and they are $800 + for a used one and New are well over $1000.

I'm at the point now where I'm just going to save up and buy a Volta or the 1180 series when it comes out. Yes, I'm aware that it is super overkill at this point, but if I can put aside enough money prior and get it before the bit miners grab it, which shouldn't be too difficult in my location, I'll have something to work with, even if I have to spend the next year building the rest of the system.

My computers usually last me 7-8 years anyways.
