I'm assuming you've locked the framerate to 60fps? If that doesn't work, then drop to 1080p.

The CPU thing is easy to prove, just run the game with task manager open and post a screenshot.

I highly doubt it's the 2500k because Intel CPU's really haven't come that far in terms of gaming. The caveats to this benchmark are that it's 1080p Ultra, not 1440p and that the test system is using 32GB of Ram. Even with only 8GB of ram, I would expect TC to be getting greater than 20fps on low while playing at 1440p. While showing its age, the 2500k is still a fantastic processor.

It's important to know what the rules are first, so that, when you decide to break them, you can better judge the effect.

At least pretend you looked at the benchmark. A 2500k averages 115fps with a min. of 68 at 1080p Ultra. It should not be dropping to 20fps and low settings just from upping resolution to 1440p. Something else is wrong. 8GB of ram is a bit low for the game, but still shouldn't be causing such terrible performance to this extent.

20 FPS is way too low, but that benchmark seems to be from the single player, and multiplayer with 64 players is much more demanding. Single player benches are useless for estimating the multiplayer performance.

Here's a multiplayer benchmark including the i5 2500k. But it's still a very undemanding test sequence, no action at all, since they want the test to be as reproducible as possible for fair comparisons.

http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Battlefield-1-2016-Spiel-54981/Specials/Battlefield-1-They-Shall-not-Pass-Benchmarks-1223170/

Regular dips to 20 FPS is obviously too low, and TC says BF1 didn't have this bad performance before, but the i5 2500k failing to maintain 60 FPS with alot of action going on is definitely possible

I haven't searched for this, but I'd expect that it'd create a huge mess on their forums if the latest update suddenly reduced everyone's performance to this extent. Which is why I'm expecting this to rather be due to overheating or a broken driver for the game.

It's obviously the CPU...past i5 are not good enough for modern triple A titles like BF1. The minimum would be a Ryzen 5 1400 or any i7 CPU from 2nd generation or newer. TC, upgrade your CPU to either an i7 2600K or newer and get 16 GB of RAM.
