Was having a pretty fun day. Listening to Psytrance compilations, reading about custom PC building, planning to replace my 2005-era entertainment laptop with a super-frugal "supercomputer" (by ~2010 standards, lol, but my backlog goes back another two decades, so whatever). Had a very nice build coming along with case, motherboard, and processor picked out for ~$275 all with Amazon Prime shipping. Then I turn to choosing a GPU...

(You see the punchline coming, right?)

So I root out this article:

https://www.extremetech.com/gaming/231134-amd-radeon-rx-480-review-the-best-200-gpu-you-can-buy-today

And get all excited about what a great addition this is going to be for my build!

But no. They're all like $600 because of the cryptocurrency craze.

@#$*^!

It looks like this started in ~July 2017 and has only gotten worse? Was there ever a time it let up? I see threads from September advising that some cards are still decently priced because miners "skipped" them, but even those are astronomical now.

When will these go back to normal? Anyone know? I want my $200 RX 480!

hopefully the GPU manufacturers find a way to block mining on normal cards, and charge a ridiculous price for "special mining cards"

Just went on Craigslist to look for one. First post I see is someone offering an Xbox One 500GB console for any Radeon graphics cards.

*facepalm*

I'm sure the market will be flooded with cheap used GPUs when the next gen cards are released.

You can pick up 980Ti's up cheap right now which perform at 1070 levels for a fraction of the price.

Just don't bother trying to buy the Voltas, suppose to be a miners dream.

The higher end cards like the 1080 were not effected till recently. 1070 was above MSRP as well as the 1060 6 gig, but not as bad as they are now. Think because a whole bunch of new cryptocurrency popped up and became a gold rush. I'm sure it will go back down, just not for a long time.
