your overly specific criteria

But a "deck building game" is an established thing...not some "overly specific criteria". It's like if OP asked for first person shooters, people started suggesting third person shooters and you then come in and say that FPS is "overly specific" reading on the request.

many ccg have pve content such as hearthstone where you build decks as you face different opponents thus making it fit your overly specific criteria

Heathstone's Dungeon Run mode does not have you buy cards during matches using resources. It has you choose a bundle of cards between matches to use in future matches. It's basically a card version of a rogue-like dungeon crawler. Deck-building games are also designed with multiplayer in mind, it's not just PvE content.

It's not overly-specific, it's the fundamental design of the genre. If you aren't adding cards to your deck in the middle of the match to use in the very same match you're currently playing, then it's not a deck-building game.

I think he thinks that "deck building" game means "any game with cards"...

I liked hex. Reminded me of the old microprose mtg game since it had a campaign with mini dungeons. I havent played it for a while, so no idea if it got better or worse.

It's important to know what the rules are first, so that, when you decide to break them, you can better judge the effect.

I tried that Slay the Spire and it's pretty good. Like, surprisingly good. It's pretty much exactly what a deck-building roguelike should be. Haven't beaten it yet but I've gotten pretty close, can consistently make it to 3rd area but can't seem to close it out

They're notably older, but I really enjoyed Etherlords 1 and 2. They're more similar to the old 1999 Microprose Magic The Gathering game, with an overmap (Heroes of Might & Magic style), enemies to defeat, resources to collect, etc... And the cards don't exactly look like cards, which can potentially mask the effect, but at its heart, the gameplay is 100% a deckbuilding card game, complete with creature summons, direct spells, interrupts, etc. It also has a pretty solid progression system, in which you earn more game-changing abilities as you level up (in addition to collecting more cards to choose from, obviously).

Totally worth checking out IMO (assuming they function on your version of Windows - I've seen reports that Etherlords 1 doesn't work on Windows 10 no matter what you try).
