Aside from dead zone issues, Wii U Pro controller. Very lightweight, 80 hour battery life. Long after dumping my Wii U and Switch, these are still my #1 PC go-to controller.

Otherwise, Steam Controller is decent when you want mouse-like control.

I can also vouch for it being wonky on PC. I bought it mainly for Switch use (1st party D-Pad sucks this time for Nintendo), but I no longer own a Switch and don't play any mobile games that support controller use...and it isn't compatible with a fair number of PC games outside of Joy2Key-style use.

Dead zone on these are huge. Just a heads up in case you're looking into it
While I may not agree with your opinion, I will defend to the death your right to have it.

Yeah I use to think this thing was good before I started using the 360 controller on PC. Then I thought that was good until I started using the XBONE. They have all served their time though.

For me, personally, I'm going to say you want two controllers.

a 360 or XONE controller (they're pretty interchangeable and the 360 controller may be cheaper)j
a controller with a good dpad, for games that support that

You could go crazier depending on what else you want or need. For instance, I personally love controllers so I have a flight stick, an arcade stick, about four classic-style controllers (sega saturn, ps2, n64, snes), and an xbox 360 controller

If you just want a controller compatible with everything, that would be the 360 or XONE controller. It's the "must have" in my opinion.
Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?
