Let me explain:

I have a laptop that i have hooked up to my TV which I use as the screen while I keep the laptop closed. However whenever I turn it off I have to open the lid to turn it back on. I know it a minor thing but I'm just wondering if a wireless keyboard can turn a computer on from its off state

AFAIK if you turn it completely off there are few if any alternatives to mechanical reactivation. On the other hand, if you set your laptop up to sleep or hibernate when not in use then any sort of input will "reawaken" the machine.

My last laptop was a Toshiba with a hinge that had ripped away from the screw socket plastic tube bits making opening it up or adjusting the screen a dangerous procedure. Even worse, the damaged hinge was the one near the power button. As a result I kept the laptop shut, hooked up to a TV and wireless mouse/keyboard set, and whenever it wasn't in use I put it to sleep.

That's not to say that what you want to do isn't impossible, at least not in absolute terms, but at the very least if it is possible it might be one of those things that's only a "feature" with specific motherboards.

It might be easier to do something with Wake on LAN but I haven't ever done so, and that's assuming your laptop supports it.

If you're trying to power it on from completely off, I don't think you can without some hokey hacks like this:

However, if your laptop is plugged in, just don't turn it off - put it to sleep, and have it set to wake on USB (or wake on input from your specific wireless keyboard). That should have the same effect as turning it off/on.

You may need to set Windows to do nothing when the lid is closed, to keep it from automatically going to sleep when you close the lid... or if you're really having a rough time, follow the video above to find and remove the magnet. I'd probably use "tear your laptop open and remove parts" as something of a last resort, though.

Or just crack the laptop open, hit the power button, and close the lid before the boot sequence gets too far along. I had to "trick" my Toshiba that way a few times because nothing else worked to keep it running when I closed the lid after a full boot up.
