I was keeping up-to-date and regularly checking to update right away, but when I initially updated everything was fine except for one of my programs (Asus GPU Tweak II) which had it's GPU FanService crashing. I also did the BIOS update but I couldn't get into Windows afterwards even after reflashing the previous BIOS and doing system restore through the windows install/setup. (Ended up wiping my SSD and reinstalling Windows. RIP.)

Asus GPU Tweak II got updated like the day after and the Windows Update popped up (First time around I updated on my own by downloading the packages from the site. It didn't show up in Windows Update) last night and I just went for it. No issues. Still haven't done BIOS though, I don't want the same issue to potentially rise again...

What about you?

Also incase you haven't heard and are curious:

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/884637-meltdown-and-spectre-patch-shows-significant-impact-on-ssd-performance/

Also just ran over this -- https://www.techspot.com/news/72709-intel-publishes-findings-alleged-spectre-meltdown-patch-performance.html

Looks like my 6700K is fine. Although I find that interesting that all the numbers are 90%+ except for one at 79%... Guess it doesn't matter though since it's not like I'll be leveraging the CPU like that to notice.

Although.. I hope like Adobe Premiere Pro CC / Adobe Photoshop CC didn't get impacted much. More so Adobe Premiere Pro CC... render times and all.

Also it'd would've been nice to see Intel do a bigger test and showcase the performance hit for several generations and not just the current/recent ones... (6th/7th/8th gen) Guess have to look elsewhere.

Just via OS. Is it really necessary to update the BIOS on my mobo?

For the best protection, yes. However, manufacturers will start with newer boards first and work their way back, slowly. There is no telling at what point they will stop. I'd expect at most they'll probably update BIOS for the last 3 gens.

From what I've gathered through research, it's highly recommended.

I got the windows update. Haven't checked for a bios update yet. Anyone know if most manufacturers are releasing updates for Z77/Ivy Bridge era boards?
Every time I try to go where I really wanna be it's already where I am, 'cuz I'm already there

The last BIOS update for my Z77 was back in 2013, so not much chance that'll happen. Windows is updated though.

I'd have to find the source, but I'm pretty sure MSI said they are updating back through Skylake. This is pretty much what I would expect from most manufacturers. Skylake and forward are considered the modern CPUs now. Anything before that is going to have limited support.
