The DOOM and Quake engines have been remade a lot,

If you're talking about stuff like GZDoom, those aren't really remade. Those source ports are still based on the same source code as the original DOS games. Remade engine would imply that the engine is re-created from scratch, using the original game as a reference point at best.

That said, the TC isn't being clear at all about what "remake" is supposed to mean in this topic. I don't think it was thought all the way through.

They're rebuilt, sometimes to the point the original engine is unrecognizable.
Even I'm not crazy enough to believe that distortion of reality

I have never seen a source port of Doom or Quake that was unrecognizable. It wouldn't matter that much if I did either; the Half-Life engine's Quake origins are unrecognizable, but it's still considered to be a branch, not an "engine remake." Same deal with all the unofficial source ports which are still recognizably Doom and Quake.

I think Ys probably deserves an honorable mention.
PC'88, PC'98, and IBM PC would all be remakes, and then another Steam port for good measure. All official.
Oh hey, even more than that. PC8801, Sharp X1, PC 9801, FM-7, MSX-2, Apple II, MS-Dos, X68000, and Windows as Chronicles and Complete. That's definitely worth a mention. Not even counting the console ports there.

Half-Life's engine is considered a branch because it was literally derived from the Quake engine codebase. There's been at least a few reimplementations of things like DOOM and Quake.
