The RAM prices are insane. I bought my PC around August and I had to pay double ($135 for 16 gb 3200 mhz). People a year before that had bought it for $60-70

Now that RAM is about $180.

Will things be different for future RAM formats like DDR5 or HBM2? Or at least it could mean a reduction in DDR4 demand when it gets replaced by DDR5?

I expect my next PC build will be sometime in the 2020's but just hope it won't be like $300-500 for standard RAM kit, like if a 16GB cost as much as a GTX 1080/1080ti.

@DarkZV2Beta

It really depends on the market. I'd expect DDR4 to go back down in a year or so.

A year would be great TBH, will be a while till I can throw away more cash on hardware components. I need to go to a 16GB kit but no rush I guess as everything at least still works even with 8GB.

Guess I just can't buy stuff like RoTR that use 10+.

Is ECC ram compatible with all boards? I use ddr3 as well. Just noticed ecc ram seems cheaper

Isn't ECC server ram? Non ECC is what the average people want. iirc.

I needed it badly too because my RAM was no good, causing random crashes etc.

I'm testing it now hoping everything checks out. Then I'll RMA my old sticks and add it to my set up. Can probably get another 2 years or more from this i7 920 build if this fixes my crashing and Blue Screen issues

Good luck

No. I'm running this on a dual 2011 server board.

If a board supports ECC, it doesn't support regular memory and vice versa. The reason ECC is cheap is because servers are upgrading DDR3 based systems to DDR4, so all the ECC DDR3 that was in use gets pulled and resold to cover some of the upgrade cost.
