Companies do this all the time with not re-releasing games that seem easy to re-release on PC... but I'm focusing on one specific game here.

Final Fantasy IV PSP, or even the SNES Final Fantasy IV. Can anyone think of a reason why they would release the phone port of the DS version on PC, but then would not release the PSP or SNES or really any other version? It would take them very little effort to do, and they have to know people would buy it even it was less of an effort than MMLC1 (which was proven to just be a ROM/emulation thing with a custom-front end https://www.reddit.com/r/Megaman/comments/3igzxk/mega_man_legacy_collection_is_a_fancy_emulator/)

Any idea why they don't do it? Getting it out onto something like Steam, I mean there are other methods to play these games on PC, but since it would take them next to no effort to release it with a price tag... even if it didn't get them a ton of sales, it would still just be money for something they already did with next to no effort, and since it would be on Steam it isn't something they'd have to take the time to re-licence and re-distribute on a new platform or whatever. It would just be sitting there "forever" dangling as extra income for them. Even moreso if they did this with all games from their golden era.

Is there something I'm missing here for why they wouldn't do this? It seems like stubbornness and/or laziness.

I know it might sound ridiculous, but I would really like to give SE money for PC releases of more versions of FFIV, I'd rebuy Secret of Evermore, etc., even though I have legitimate means of playing them all otherwise. I would actually get rid of my physical copies and just keep with the Steam versions if they did this. I mean... drop FFIV SNES in an emulator and sell it for $5. I'm a sucker for it, sold. This is pretty much all GoG games were when they started, games still come out like that and do well. I'm not trying to be insulting here, but I do have to ask, are they stupid? What gives?

Plus they're missing Dragon Quest 4/5/6 Android/iOS versions on Steam... 1/2/3 I could live without but again I just don't get it, if they were doing the double-dip thing fine, make it exclusive on phones then port to PC to get two sales from some people who would only buy once if it were simultaneously released on phones *AND* PC. But they have yet to port it to PC. Again the f***?

I don't understand Square Enix at all anymore. I have no idea what they're thinking re: their old back catalog, so I'm just content to go around them.

Here's one of the people that made MMLC1 talking about what went into making that:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLWY7fCXUwE&t=2009s

I still don't get why even he thinks it was "difficult" to do MMLC1 when the base game was just ROMs in an emulator (which again it's proven that this is what's hidden in the exe, the front end was just a custom UI for that emulation system to make it look pretty for those unaccustomed to emulation and also probably so they could do the "it isn't an emulator" marketing they did pre-release) if you start the talk at the beginning he talks about being a ROM abuser in his day), the only difficulty I could perceive is maybe from figuring out how to shoehorn "longevity" into the title through something like the Challenge mode which for me, if I go back to MM I'm not going to do stitched together levels that are out of sequence. If I'm making the time for MM, I'm going to play the game the way it was meant to be played.

I don't know how the f*** it takes a small dev team 8 months to dump ROMs into an emulator and design a custom-front end, which is all they needed to do for what MMLC1 was. Is the extra fluff stuff just for the sake of job security? Because if they did what people needed and that's it (the f***ing game functioning like it would in a free emulator with a free ROM), they could dump all these onto PC digital in a few months and just ride that wave for the rest of Steam's lifecycle.

I'm still very confused why people were so pissed at me for talking about Jazz Jackrabbit abandonware then suggest ROMs and console emulation freely like they're totally different concepts. Is it just protect PC turf, f*** consoles?

The only reason I will forever flag any form of positive suggestion to ROM/emulate over having the option to actually *buy* it on this forum is because of how much attitude I ate from this *entire* forum for discussing Jazz Jackrabbit in the exact same light.

I want to pay for a SNES version of FFIV on PC. Or the PSP version. Or the GBA version. And the same goes for many games from that era because Squaresoft (and later Square-Enix) were at their peak, and it would also give me a reason to get rid of my physical copies because I would have a legitimate digital PC version I would never need to replace or clean or hook up the original system or replace batteries etc. etc. etc.

Why suggest emulation to me? Do you work for SE? If you do, tell me SE, why the f*** don't you want my money? Are you forgetting what the launch of FFXIV almost did to you? They don't need to do an out-of-business sale, but f***, you think that would put a bit of hustle on them to get easy money where they could without sacrificing game quality. Just taking a ROM off the net (because it's theirs so they don't even need to do a manual dump) and putting it in an emulator with frontend then giving it a test playthrough to ensure it works from start to finish and selling it is all they need to do. You put that s*** on FFWD to breeze through cutscenes and autobattles, plug a temp in to be the one doing it and you can knock out one every 2 - 3 days at what do temps cost? f***ing $1000 investment / game total max for the entire deal before it's listed and being sold to consumers. Then you're just taking sales for as long as Steam is up. Jesus. I'm so f***ing confused.

The JRPG market in modern gaming still seems so assbackwards sometimes and I'm not singling out SE here I mean the JRPG market in general, sometimes I look at their business practices and it's like running into someone that still practices Wicca.

My best guess that makes it easier to not get a headache over the otherwise absurd lack of the logic behind this is that they're afraid of reminding people how good they used to be by acknowledging it themselves by officially releasing their best games *as they were*.

I truly believe that's why Chrono Trigger on iOS/Android had that piece of s*** non-toggleable bilinear filter applied to it. Absolutely nobody would look at an image like that vs. with the filter off and think "force the image to look like it's smeared to s***, looks good to me!" unless there was some kind of bitter intent in putting it into the wild like that.

That or the guy that turned it on and left it that way has brutal glaucoma and couldn't tell the difference, but had so much authority nobody wanted to suggest to him that he take the filter off.

Except that doesn't make sense in any form whatsoever. They sell it on PC, they can resell it on every single console to come out because most people will rebuy it there anyway. There are people that own beast gaming PCs, buy a game for it, then rebuy the same game once (or multiple times if they own multiple consoles it comes out for) for their console(s).

One example of this exactly: Wii to Wii U VC was a process to keep this short. I know someone who rebought every VC game they had bought on the Wii, for their Wii U VC, at full price, because they couldn't get the "transfer" process which just knocked the price of anything you already owned on Wii VC down to $1 on Wii U VC.

Take a minute to let it sink in what he paid for there.

There are plenty of people out there like this. I know I'm saying "milk me" because I want to pay them for something when I can get the same something I'm asking for for "free". But I'm not that level of "milk me", but there are a s***load of people that are.

There is no "money" reason to *not* make these available on PC.
