These look like exactly what I want, though I have heard they're a little outdated. Is the only difference between the VG and the MG the freesync support?

Yes that is the only difference but get the freesync one, if you can get this one I have 2 of them and it doubles as a charging ports that it has.

It is very easy I can give my results if you like or you can just google the monitors name and settings. There are plenty of web pages with this monitors settings.
