Well if you don't know any better, you put up with more. Kinda like how I used to put up with a 1200bps modem. I could read faster than it could display text (I know I could read faster than 300, pretty sure 1200 too).
Also one of the first "3D" games I ever played (Elite on the C-64) would often slow down to probably 5-10 fps if a lot of small ships were on screen. Probably the only way I could survive the thargoids was when they released the tharglets and the framerate would tank.
Oh and there was one game (Legacy of the Ancients) which boasted 3D Dungeons with monsters that would be visible at a distance and would "run up to you". And that was probably a whole 3fps tops when they chased me.
