I remember when I had my crappy 386dx with 4MB of RAM back in middle school and I would dream of getting of getting one of the new compaqs with their 16x CD drive and 16MB of RAM. My older brother would teach me about PC parts in the back of those mail order catalogs that would come to the house and I remember Cyrix being so much cheaper.

I never owned a cryix cpu but I remember a friend had one. Although my intel/voodoo combo always seemed to beat out his machine despite having a faster clock speed and better gpu

I was just watching this video earlier today... I remember hearing about Cyrix but I never owned one. I think I knew a few people who did own one though. I laughed at the part where he said they tried to spin "13fps" as smooth gaming

Back then nobody wouldve said too much. We were cool with having Star Fox running in the 20s. I remember being so jealous of my friend who had the 3Dfx card in his PC... seeing GL Quake for the first time... incredible.

Thats why I posted this vid. I may not have owned a cyrix cpu, but those were exciting times for me as a PC user. Learned a lot.

My parents bought my sister a budget computer using a Cyrix MediaGX CPU in the mid to late 90's for college work (computers were still pretty expensive), and that machine was probably one of the slowest I've ever used. "Utilitarian" is putting it mildly. I guess compared to an old 486 DX2 50 it might have seemed like a speed demon.

Lol, I distinctly remember playing through the Quake shareware on our old 486 and it was a literal slideshow (looking at gameplay now I don't know HOW I tolerated it, lol, I was younger and I guess the novelty of the fully-3D environments pulled me in).

Well if you don't know any better, you put up with more. Kinda like how I used to put up with a 1200bps modem. I could read faster than it could display text (I know I could read faster than 300, pretty sure 1200 too).

Also one of the first "3D" games I ever played (Elite on the C-64) would often slow down to probably 5-10 fps if a lot of small ships were on screen. Probably the only way I could survive the thargoids was when they released the tharglets and the framerate would tank.

Oh and there was one game (Legacy of the Ancients) which boasted 3D Dungeons with monsters that would be visible at a distance and would "run up to you". And that was probably a whole 3fps tops when they chased me.

Starfox averaged 12-14 FPS or so.

No cant say I do. The first PC I ever bought I barely remember what was in it.

was back in 1997 and I think it was a P2 at 266mhz maybe.

256MB of ram

10 or 20GB HDD

Don't even know what the GPU was.
