I WILL play witcher 2 soon, but I wanted to know if I should play Witcher 1.

Is t a must play title? Also does anything carry over? and how demanding is it?

The gameplay is pretty terrible, but so is the gameplay in Witcher 2. I wouldn't say either are remotely a "must play title". Witcher 2 is mostly known for it's graphics and it's above average (as far as games go) story. Both games have horrific gameplay

Edit: I don't mean to sound like a blind hater, I think the games are alright over all, but for some reason the last few months have been filled with fanboys for CD Project Red when they really haven't done all that much worthy of praise. They are a pretty decent company so far, nothing they've done has really said much about them as far as a game company goes, it's mostly just been them being good to fans

The game follows the story of Geralt of Rivia, so what do you think? You wouldn't just skip ahead 10 chapters in a book.

Geralt won't swing his sword unless you click directly on an enemy. This is an innovation you don't often see in action rpgs.
... even on Earth Mode.

The combat is not for everyone but to flat out say the gameplay in both the Witcher games is terrible is not a thing that's at all accurate if you enjoy the general nature of RPG's and their gameplay style...

The games are great, though I'm openly a huge fan of them, I can still recognize their faults. The general gameplay definitely isn't one of them, it has exploration, preparation, collecting, fighting and dialogue to navigate, and all are executed well imo, so that's really all you can ask for in an RPG.

If you don't like them it's because they aren't your taste, because in no way are the games terribly executed, though they falter in some areas (pacing in TW1 and inventory management in TW2 as examples)

Combat in Witcher 1 is really bad imo. But it's a story heavy rpg. So combat isn't that important and shouldn't be the reason you're playing it anyway.
