  2. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  3. Why did GTA San Andreas not get a number in the title?

I don't understand, why some titles in the series are numbered and others aren't. I think technically San Andreas should have been GTA IV, but it didn't get numbered, which makes it look like a spin off or something.

Just marketing really- San Andreas sounded good so they went with that.

i guess the numbers just didn't sound right

only thing that bothers me with this is that GTA 3 wasn't called 'GTA: Liberty City' .. since now we have this imbalance

I was gonna point to the fact that San Andreas is a prequel that takes place almost a decade before GTA3, and how prequels rarely if ever get numbered titles, and then I remembered just as I was typing that Rockstar's very own Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of those rare exceptions to the rule. So I don't know.

New number means new engine. 3, VC and SA all have the same engine.
Doom, the game with unlimited ways to play.

I'm fairly sure Grand Theft Auto and GTA 2 ran on the same engine.

Vice City and San Andreas are set in the same universe as GTA 3. Its like how the Ezio Trilogy Brokerhood and whatever arent numbered

Yeah, that’s what we were told at the time, but in GTA V, Lester indirectly references Niko in the story, and Gay Tony is an Online character, so the rules have blurred. I think they’re more or less tying it to generations of consoles.

Exactly it was very wrong of Lester to do that.
