Got a "game mode" setting on the TV? Try that.

AVSForum.com has some good gaming advice, last I looked. Just checked, yes, still does. That's where I'd look while waiting for a better response here.

Yeah, sorry. Not much help here. I still have my PS2 hooked up to a 4:3 CRT. They all look squishy to me, but I expect distortion from widescreen settings of that era.

Only the text, though? Check for captioning settings, on any device in the loop. Some in-game fontsets render checkboxes, for instance, as a high ASCII box character that's subject to font substitutions. Purely guessing, but what the hey, it's worth a shot.

Yeah, I've tried everything and every combination of settings. I did not have this problem with the Jak games. I just don't understand how it's ONLY the text and other UI elements that look deformed, while the rest of the picture looks perfect. It's like the UI wasn't properly scaled with the rest of the game when switching modes.

I just want to know if it's like that for others who use widescreen or not. This is the original game on an original PS2.

For now I am just going to play it on 4:3 mode. =/

4:3 mode is best in any case. The Ratchet and Clank games achieved 16:9 support via Vert-. That means they chopped off the top and bottom one-sixths of the screen and zoomed in. That's a total of 1/3 of the vertical screen area that's just gone. This makes platforming vertically a bit difficult.

Plus, they may well have only adjusted the play screen to 16:9 and not the UI. Vert- won't work for text, etc.

The God of War games did the same thing for 16:9 support. The special Easter Egg messages don't show up properly in 16:9 mode. At least one video showing them has Kratos jumping up and down to try to get the whole message on screen.
