Why did the covenant follow Pillar from Reach to Halo?

What information did cortana have ? Did that forerunner ship on reach contain the cords to Halo?

The simplest explanation was that they did not want any humans escaping from the planet, so they gave chase. Cortana was at work with Halsey in deciphering the information regarding the rings (and ark) in that forerunner structure, so kind of subconsciously yes she had the coordinates (although it is hard to tell if she knew what she was doing in jumping there in slipspace "randomly").

According to the novel, she calculated the coordinates would not lead to a human settlement, and therefore technically met with Cole protocol standard.

Oh, realized that didn't really answer the question.

The issue was that the Covenant was not accepting surrender. A lot of Forerunner tech seemed to be keyed to humans. Human arrival in Forerunner installation would result in a welcome mat being rolled out, and systems coming online.

The Heirarchs, the Covenant Leadership like Regret, had access to an AI and discovered that that was not an accident. So they ordered humanity to be exterminated.

If they could not do this by just killing everyone on the ground, they would use orbital bombardment to turn a planet into a lifeless ball. (Referred to as 'Glassing', due to the heat of plasma weapons leaving much of the surface looking like glass.)

Given the level of viscousness, one of the human admirals (Preston Cole) ordered that no human vehicle was to jump directly to another human colony. They were to set random jump coordinates first, and verify they were not being followed. If the ship was disabled, the nav data erased, and AI destroyed.

So basically, it was, by the time of Reach, an issue for the Covenant to capture, or be able to follow, or capture, a human ship to gain tactical information so they could more quickly exterminate us.
