2009 sure was a weak year in gaming

RE5 beating Punch-Out is a badly aged result imo

RE5 beating Borderlands and possibly even DQ5 is badly aged also.

but for the first time in tournament history, not a single Nintendo system was represented. I'll look as I continue doing these writeups, but I don't think that ever happens again.

After further thinking over the past few years' worth of tournaments, I can confirm there's only one other year where a Final Four doesn't have any games exclusive to a Nintendo system. It'll get brought up when I get to said year.

RE5 is a good game! It's definitely a better division winner there than NSMB Wii would've been. And how the heck did Prof Layton do so well? Didn't think it was that great.

Looking at the GFAX GOTYs, gonna guess... 2015. Unless Mario Maker had a good run.
Slowly becoming a Final Fantasy aficionado.
Currently playing: Xenoblade Chronicles!

Layton had a strong following with his first three games on B8.

Good game, bad Resident Evil game IMO. Forced co-op can go kick rocks. Borderlands and Punch-Out were better than both 1 and 2 seeds in that region

Best Game of 2002
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=350000

Ran: February 2010
Overall top seed: Metroid Prime
1 seeds: Metroid Prime, GTA Vice City, Kingdom Hearts, Super Mario Sunshine
Final Four: See above
Ultimate Loser: Battlefield 1942
Championship: Metroid Prime defeated Kingdom Hearts 78-63 in overtime

With 2009 behind us and a good 11 months left in 2010, I figured what better time then that moment to start filling the remaining void in the decade. Next up was 2002, where the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and Dreamcast were officially out the door and we were fully fledged in the latest era of gaming. Retroactive tournaments went back to top 10 nominations, and Metroid Prime led the pack to get the overall seed.

As you can tell, 2002 would join 2009 to get all the top seeds to the Final Four, and they mostly did it in confident fashion. Metroid Prime looked the strongest, winning against a Monster Rancher game, Onimusha 2, Sonic Advance, and Wild Arms 3 all with ease. Next in strength was Kingdom Hearts, pasting Serious Sam and Gitaroo Man, before putting just barely 60% on Sly Cooper and Ratchet and Clank. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City made it to the semifinals, but not before being unable to double TimeSplitters 2 or Tactics Ogre, before barely escaping Sonic Adventure 2 Battle by 2 votes. Mario Sunshine made easy work out of Sega Soccer Slam before doubling Fatal Frame, barely not doubling Harmony of Dissonance, and then having a closer than expected match with #6 seed Jet Set Radio Future in the Elite Eight.

Wait, did I say a #6 seed in the Elite Eight? When it was all said and done, the only #2 seed to meet its #1 seed counterpart was Ratchet and Clank in KH's region. REmake was upset by Jet Set Radio Future in round 3, Morrowind lost to #3 seed Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, and Eternal Darkness lost by a single vote in overtime to #7 seed Wild Arms 3 in the second round. The most impressive Cinderella run this time around was Sonic Advance, a #12 seed, knocking off Star Fox Adventures and Warcraft III before bowing out to Metroid Prime, and we got to see #11 seed Grandia Xtreme win against Contra: s***tered Soldier. The only other potential upset we nearly saw was Burnout 2 lose by a single vote to Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance.

For how good the 1 seeds were, the semifinals were clear as day on who was going to meet in the finals. Metroid Prime disposed of Vice City 35-20, while Kingdom Hearts put up 66% on Mario Sunshine with an impressive 28-14 victory. By many people's standards, including my own, 2002's top two games made the finals. Prime and KH were close for the entire first day, and after double checking the votes and tallying up the numbers, we had our first ever tie in the championship after 24 hours, forcing an overtime. And in overtime, Metroid Prime decided it was done playing. The troops came in to support Samus in full fashion, and Kingdom Hearts didn't stand a chance, causing Square to fall to 0-4 in the finals after losing 78-63, a total that is still the highest combined amount of votes to this day.

The 02 tournament has a few things that wouldn't happen today. I still think Prime repeats if I posted the same bracket starting tomorrow, but I also think the following goes down...
1) Kingdom Hearts wins, but not without a legit fight from Ratchet and Clank
2) Sonic Adventure 2 might beat Vice City. The GTA series has soured for the most part on B8
3) REmake wins its region, barring any craziness from Mario Sunshine.

Still, no genuine time to sit on those results, I was on a mission to get s*** done, and it wouldn't be long before the next tournament was underway...

Best Game of 2003
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=356935

Ran: March 2010
Overall top seed: The Legend of Zelda - The Wind Waker
1 seeds: Wind Waker, Pokemon RSE, Star Wars: KOTOR, Viewtiful Joe
Final Four: Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Disgaea, KOTOR, Beyond Good and Evil
Ultimate Loser: .hack//Outbreak Part 3
Championship: Prince of Persia defeated Knights of the Old Republic 18-13

The GameCube finally got its perennial Zelda title that year and it won the overall seed for 2003. It wouldn't be long, however, before things started getting awry in the bracket.

Slight correction from my 2009 writeup first off: The original Call of Duty won as an #8 seed here, and THAT would be CoD's final win to date. Anyway, the top seeds played like disappointments for the most part. Let's discuss the one that did make the semifinals first. KOTOR was a GotY across many sources in 2003 and for good reason: it was arguably the first Star Wars game that was a masterpiece, and it was an RPG? So many players were down for that. KOTOR's only close match in its region was an 11-8 win over Soulcalibur II in round 3. Otherwise, it made laughing stocks out of Tony Hawk's Underground, SSX 3, and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.

And now for the rest of the #1 seeds. Pokemon RSE failed to live up to its tournament-winning predecessor, losing in round 3 to a #5 seeded Jak II. Jak and Daxter peaked at the Elite Eight that year, losing a respective 12-9 to #3 seeded Disgaea; if I had actually ran this contest in 2003, Disgaea might have won the whole damn thing based on how much it was loved back then. Viewtiful Joe barely snatched the last #1 seed from Beyond Good and Evil, and it showed as Jade and crew edged Joe by a single vote in the Elite Eight to steal the last final four spot. Finally, The Wind Waker became the first overall top seed to miss the semifinals, losing 14-10 to #3 seeded Prince of Persia.

Yep, that's right; Wind Waker didn't even get the chance to play #2 seeded Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando; the highly praised sequel was stunned by #7 seed Dark Cloud 2 in the second round (which also would have been seeded higher if this contest ran six years earlier). No crazy upsets in the first round, as the lowest seed to advance was a #10, but at the very least, Jak and Dark Cloud's sequels made some noise for at least a round or two. Also on a very rare note, Madden NFL 2004 got a rare win for a sports game, beating True Crime by a single vote before getting shut down by Viewtiful Joe in round 2.

So for the second time in tournament history, none of the games involved were a Nintendo exclusive; sure, the Prince and Jade could both be found on the Gamecube, but those games were multiplatform. Knights of the Old Republic barely got by Beyond Good and Evil 13-11, while Prince of Persia scored a close 24-18 win over Disgaea. Finally, the Prince built up a small lead over Star Wars and kept it long enough to secure a slightly lower total than usual win.

2003 stands out for quite a few reasons, most notably the fact that a huge Gamecube exclusive (a Zelda one at that) gets beaten by Prince of Persia. On that note, I'll say two things:
1) I don't think that happens today
2) I'm glad I didn't run it today. Sands of Time, while not my 2003 GotY, is a damn fine title
